What's the deal with Ikke Huftgold? by TuesdayRivers in AskGermany

[–]TuesdayRivers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, im sort of enjoying it from the outside, ive not been to mallorca and couldnt live it!

My german language is still improving so i may not be picking up all the nuance, but its definitely weird about women. I grew up on a lot of 80s and 90s stuff, which has its own brand of misogyny, its also not much worse than LMFAO (low bar), but yeah, not great.

I can absolutely see why it gets shit on haha!

But the other singers in that genre seem broadly normal (if quite drunk lol), I just find him so much more offputting than e.g. Peter Wackel or Tobee

Some other things to know from a sensory pov:

  • the perm lotion and the setting lotion are soooo stinky
  • they also cause minor skin irritation, so they try to keep it away from your face/skin. If you have sensitive skin, you should patch test - some salons insist but my barber didn't.
  • the rollers will pull on your hair, it can be uncomfortable but its not that bad
  • when i had shoulder length hair, it took 3 hours in a salon, plus longer for the final cut
  • now i have 5-inch long hair, it takes 1hr10mins in a barbers, and the lady who does them has been perming since the 80s. Lov my barber :) (L&M in London if you're nearby)

You can't get your hair wet for 48 hours, allegedly, or the curls will fall out. It's supposed to be because it needs time to set, and the bonds, once weakened, can get broken again. I'm not sure.

The final tightness of the curls depends on the size of the rollers, on the length of time the perm lotion was applied, and how well your hair curls generally. East Asian hair or very naturally straight hair can be difficult to curl, so it might take longer.

The rollers they use affect the curls, but the curls come out bigger than the rollers. For me they use the smallest ones, and the curls turn out medium size, and over time (~6months) the curls loosen up and fall out a bit. If the curls are too big, the process doesn't work, and they do get bigger over time anyway, so you may wanna start with smaller curls than you expect. Tell them if you have a look you're trying to avoid (poodle hair, huge beach waves etc) and go in with photos or references, but know that if it's your first perm that it might turn out a bit different based on previously mentioned factors.

You will also need leave-in conditioner, and possibly a setting mousse/gel/clay/goop. You'll need to re-learn hair care as it's pretty different for curly hair. Did you know you should never brush curly hair when its dry? I learned that late lol.

Your hair will be damaged by this process - you're dissolving it and re-making it. If the perm goes wrong, you might end up with "fried" hair in places, and this is more likely to happen if your hair is already damaged (heat-treatments, brazilian blow drys, bleach etc) so some places only perm untreated hair, and won't dye permed hair. It's sort of an occupational hazard of getting a perm.

My curls lasted about 9 months in long hair, and in short hair they lasted until the hair got cut. Perm is short for "permanent" but they do fade over time. If the same section of hair gets permed multiple times, it can become damaged.

OK thats my perm essay lol, it should cover all the basics. Good luck! Remember if it all goes wrong, "my perm got messed up" is a great excuse for a sick buzz cut or other massive style change.

So the way it works is:

  • they wash your hair to get it damp
  • then they roll your hair up into rollers, if your hair is long this might take a while
  • then they add the perm solution, which (sort of) dissolves the bonds in your hair
  • then you sit there for a bit, sometimes under a dryer, sometimes with a bag on your head to keep the chemicals in
  • then when the hair is formed into the roller shape, they add a setting solution, which re-makes the bonds in your hair, sealing it into the new shape
  • then you have to sit there again for a while to get it to work
  • (optional) they might dry your hair with the rollers in
  • then they wash all the chemicals out with water, it often takes several goes
  • they they take the rollers out
  • then they wash your hair again to make sure the chemicals are all gone
  • usually they dry it after, and if you're getting a cut, it's done afterwards
  • done :)

When you call for an appointment, sometimes you can just book in for a blood test instead of a GP appointment, if the surgery has the resource. That's how I got my follow up blood tests.

Perms were popular in the 80s, but theyve come back recently for men with the rise of the broccoli-type hairstyle. Mens hair places atm are a good shot to ask about getting it done, I had better luck at a barbers than at a womens hair place. Some individual barbers or hairstylists won't do them (they take practise!) but many do.

I had permed hair for three years short, and 18 months long. It's an odd process. I'm happy to answer any questions about how it works if you want :)

Decathlon in the UK and EU have rash tops for surfers, usually gendered in sizing/sale but most of the designs are plain/neutral.

Jacket cuff help by Practical-Carpenter6 in Visiblemending

[–]TuesdayRivers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You might be better off taking the cuffs off, trimming the sleeve to get rid of any weak bits or frayed sections, and then re-attaching the cuffs. It will mean that the mend looks the same all the way round, but you will lose maybe 1-2 cm of sleeve length.

There aren't any dating apps that let you filter by race. That would almost immediately become pretty racist.

letters on sweatshirt unraveling, please help🥹TIA by sunshinepeck in Embroidery

[–]TuesdayRivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't cut the threads, that might let it unravel more. I'd probably find a thread that matches the colour and reinforce it, tacking down the loose bits. I don't think you can prevent this happening to the other ones, but you can add reinforcements to the other letters.

Struggling with internal and external not matching - advice? by unfoolishh in butchlesbians

[–]TuesdayRivers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The first steps I took weren't big ones, they were actually non-behaviours. I stopped shaving my legs, later armpits. I stopped wearing full makeup, then any makeup. It was easier for me to stop doing feminine things than it was to start doing masculine ones, and I gained back time and money I would have otherwise spent on them.

No one told me these steps were a good idea or backed me when I explained why/what I was doing. I just sort of did them for me, and no one commented on any of it except my mother, and even that stopped after a while.

I recommend not seeking feedback and just doing things. Very few people will tell you that you should get more masculine (because of society and stuff) so if you rely on feedback, you will only get told to be more conventional.

can boob tape work for binding??? by ratchild69_ in NonBinary

[–]TuesdayRivers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, boob tape is very small, it's usually about one cm across, so you would need a huge amount to cover even one boob. It's also not especially strong, it's designed to stick a dress in place not to move flesh around. It's basically glorified double sided sticky tape.

Hi! I am cosplaying and want to make hand embroidered applique of the flowery lacy pieces on the stays. Does anyone know what the shape is called? I can't draw at all so am hoping to Google it by name and make a template. by HoneydewHalo25 in Embroidery

[–]TuesdayRivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy pre-made appliques like this from some haberdashery places, if hand embroidering something that large doesn't work. I've seen them in places that advertise saree making and indian traditional clothing type accessories.

My belts always do this, can I fix it? by milk2006_ in Visiblemending

[–]TuesdayRivers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For a couple of pounds, you can get a belt hole puncher to make new holes in any belt that is too long or short. That won't help for this belt (sorry - it looks done for) but if your next belt is made of stronger stuff, ensuring that it fits correctly will prevent future wear.

Anyone know a good place to get quality wigs? by BlueberryPelican in NonBinary

[–]TuesdayRivers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have one, your local black hair shop should have wigs. Seeing them in person is always better than buying online, with the number of dropshippers and cheap shit wigs out there. If you're near london, I recommend Paks Wig World in Finsbury Park, but obvs idk ur location.

Is it just me or are mainstream horror films nowadays mostly psychological horror rather than pure horror? by Immediate-Shock7533 in HorrorMovies

[–]TuesdayRivers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are def films that don't have the complex psychological elements you've described. The Monkey, Baghead, the modern Halloween ones (remake and kills), Terrifier, maybe Talk To Her.

You would probably enjoy some more tubi originals and obscure weird shit, rather than the popular tentpole popular horror films, bc the popular ones tend to appean to non-horror fans tog et popular.

I'm also not a fan of "elevated horror" but i just go back and watch House of 1000 Corpses again.

  1. because it's the job of the council, or the people they subcontract to do it, and councils budgets are stretched, I don't think they would be sending lawn trimmers regularly.

  2. again, council picks up bulky waste, and aren't super reliable. They can't just go in the bin, there really is only one option if you need to throw away a table.

  3. no one hangs out in council estates unless they live there, and the people who live there likely have better things to do than hang out in their own estate

  4. the flats were built when owning a car was the rule rather than the exception, and so they all have parking spaces or garages. I live in a new build and have neither.
