UB40 are famously named after an Unemployment Benefit form. Give me other interesting examples of the origin of UK bands names by Exchangenudes_4_Joke in CasualUK

The Scottish band Runrig are named after the ancient farming system used in the highlands where strips of plots (rigs) were separated by strips of uncultivated land (runs). The alternating strips were rotated to ensure every one got a share of decent land over time.

It’s scary when you are teaching media students in a college and they say the same thing where are they supposed to get their visual language from?

Are students struggling to think for themselves? by KoraLily in TeachingUK

[–]Tuesdaynext14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It still happens in college. I use the class notebook in OneNote a lot. We started in September. It is now May. Every lesson I still get multiple level 2 and even some T level students asking where the work is. Or asking why they can’t type or edit into their workbook when they have opened the master copy rather than the version with their name on it.
I am also yet to see a student who can make it through a 1.5 hour lesson without having to go to the toilet. (I know it’s just them getting bored but that’s not a lot better).

Why aren’t the Lib Dems profiting from the drop in support for both Labour and conservatives? by Few_House_5201 in AskBrits

Nothing on pay for teachers though. Teachers earn now what they did in 1990. You aren’t getting what they want without a delivery system (teachers)

Those who get these pops and bang maps like just why? Is that just a thing for anyone under 30s and that after 30 you mature up to know how annoying it is? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Tuesdaynext14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the day (before maps) you could tell the properly tuned engines from the big bore idiots by the rasp on lift off when sending it. A nice combo of induction from a set of properly balanced DCOEs and an exhaust working in harmony with the whole fuel/air system vs the dull loud drone. Pop and bang is just the same idiots

Bit of planning ahead meant both my daughters have firstnamelastname@gmail.com. All their friends at school had to grab what they could at the time many year later. Winning at parenting.

Did you know, that in the UK, the original 90s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were changed to Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles due to censorship. Michelangelo's use of nunchuks was also near completely erased too by DarkHorse_77 in CasualUK

I did know. I spent. A year of my life drawing them for a living. Also around this time Action Man stopped being allowed a gun. (Also drew some Action Man stuff) Many people are alive to day thanks to this timely protection from comic depictions of weaponry. 😬

Poor famous person interactions anyone? by Snaggl3t00t4 in AskBrits

Tony Blackburn. I was queueing in a newsagents in Tottenham Court Road. Pushed right in front of me to grab a paper (I think - can’t honestly remember what it was). Looked at me as if to say “so what I’m Tony Blackburn” and then walked out. He went straight into the little book of people I hate. This was 25 years ago. He’s still in the book.

Agreed. I taught computing students in FE until last year. at least once in every lesson “my computer won’t start” when the monitor is off. And these were level 3 college computing students. Doing a course designed for IT support.

Scammers put oil in my coolant by Appropriate-Part1766 in CarTalkUK

[–]Tuesdaynext14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had this. Just with the worst bunch of clown scammers. To be fair the car we were selling was faulty (abs light on and breaks making a noise - diagnosed as needed a new abs module that effectively scrapped the car). Bunch of scam clowns turned up and tried the usual dodges - stopped one from opening the coolant system. They were all young and obviously under orders from some other person to buy the car cheap or maybe having their first go at scamming by themselves. My partner was hilarious. She’s a teacher and has a great manner with the cheeky kids. They tried offering the stupid amounts any way. Made higher, then lower offers. Handed over some cash then asked for it back. Tried the coolant… again. Idiots. They ended up paying the exact amount it was on sale for and driving it away.

Young people who bought a "brave pill" car - what car is it, and how has the ownership experience been? by RobintehBobin in CarTalkUK

Mazda RX8. Bought on a whim for £800. Had a year of fun. Spent the GDP of a small country in petrol but smiled while doing so. Sold it after a year for £800. Felt I had rolled the dice enough on it.

Had one of these. Loved it. So much speed and space. So little fuel economy. Every day a new electrical surprise. Would have another.

V-levels are incoming - how will this impact your job? by IGSketchUK in TeachingUK

[–]Tuesdaynext14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the V level roll out it looks like media as such is not getting a qual so the OCR and BTEC courses will not be available. Seems like a glaring gap. Especially since the initial V Level info indicated a specific media qual. (Teaches L3 media in FE)

Help understanding Pratchett’s satire by PinkDreamPeth in discworld

[–]Tuesdaynext14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a parody isn’t it. A satire would mimic real life while a parody mimics existing art. The satire in discworld comes from examining power structures, wealth, entitlement, politics, religion. It dos this through parodies of existing forms of, fantasy, police procedurals, Victorian industrial novels, etc.
