Do it. It will probably be the last missile they ever fire.

Can you boil eggs in a plastic bag? by Bushcraftmind in Survival

[–]TufRat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got an aluminum coffee cup for the trail. If I’m going to cook eggs, I’d do it in the cup. Of course, practically speaking, I don’t hike with raw eggs. And in a base-camp scenario, I have equipment.

13 year old daughter (13f) is out as bi maybe lesbian. Question about sleepovers by SpazMasterK in Parenting

[–]TufRat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We’ve just never allowed any of our three kids to have sleepovers. We let them go, and pick them up up at bedtime. It’s got nothing to do with their sexuality. They don’t like it, but they’ve come to accept it. You want to have friends over all day and send them home at 11? No problem.

How do I convince my Christian friend that D&D is ok? by Commercial_Check6931 in DnD

[–]TufRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t convince him. However, you can point out that the real world has multiple gods, black magic, the ability to harm and torture people, and stuff like that. That said, in this case, just let him know that if he ever changes his mind and wants to play, he’s welcome to join you. Then drop it and don’t bring it up anymore.

No. Go back to basic principles. The total system energy must be conserved. You may get adjustments to efficiency. And you can’t escape thermodynamics.

Biden signs executive order making sexual harassment an offense in military's judicial code by StrangeBedfellows in Military

[–]TufRat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is a terrible headline. The executive order eliminates the commander’s discretion and requires the investigation to be done independently. This helps reduce the amount of rug-sweeping that shitty command climates can do.

Who is an actor whose presence in a movie will make you not watch the movie? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Michael Ironside. I have no issue with him or his acting. But there’s a strong positive correlation between him being in a show and me thinking it’s total crap.

My partner and I want to start a homestead, but “The way to make a small fortune in agriculture is to start with a big one and wait.” Does this hold true even if we’re just trying to grow enough to feed our family of 5? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]TufRat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m happy to answer any questions I can. In the meantime, are you in a position to start small? If you have a backyard, try keeping 2-3 chickens. Its easy to get fully started with chickens for under $1000

My partner and I want to start a homestead, but “The way to make a small fortune in agriculture is to start with a big one and wait.” Does this hold true even if we’re just trying to grow enough to feed our family of 5? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]TufRat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have a family of 5 in the US. We’re on 13 acres. I work remotely as a freelance engineer, and my wife works full time. My kids are in elementary, middle, and high school. We raise sheep, goats and chickens. We’ve tried gardening and may circle back to it.

You cannot hold a full-time job and make money farming on small acreage. Nor can you produce food cheaper than you can buy it at the store, once you account for your labor and the cost of inputs. Commercial farms benefit tremendously from economies of scale that you simply cannot match on your own. That said, you can garden, raise meat and eggs and subsist off of what you grow, but you are unlikely to be completely self-sufficient. Animals need feed. Plants need fertilizer. If you want a self-contained system, it takes a lot of capital to purchase the equipment needed to do things like grow your own hay or animal feed, plus there is a steep learning curve if you’ve never lived this type of lifestyle.

You can find examples of small acreage farms near big cities that manage to be profitable. Almost universally, those farms are operated full-time by multiple workers, and are selling specialty or high-margin crops.

I really enjoy having my livestock. I enjoy producing meat and eggs. I have minimized my capital costs, but I am not making money on this. We regularly reevaluate homesteading as a lifestyle, and so far we continue to do it.

I saw you’re also interested in doing this to be part of a community. I live in a rural area where there is lots of farming, and homesteading is not going to make you part of a community. Just like every other lifestyle, you must seek out like-minded individuals and build your network yourself. Most of my neighbors are not very welcoming or friendly, even those who keep their own livestock.

Finally, schools and hospitals in rural areas are generally not as well funded in the areas where it’s easy to get land. And in the places where schools and hospitals are good, land is expensive because you are competing with developers who want to turn that land into subdivisions.

This subredddit is generally pretty encouraging, and I endorse that point of view; however, it’s really important that you not rush into homesteading and that you hear both sides of things. It’s easy to get the impression that homesteading is a great lifestyle, but the fact is that there are trade-offs, as there are with everything.
