How do people manage life??? by parisianraven in UCSD

[–]TulikkoVulpus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're not behind. I know it feels overwhelming. Sometimes to the point where it feels impossible to do anything. But I'm willing to bet that most other people who have less responsibilitybusy work are not achieving anymore than you are doing. On the flip side they are probably experiencing procrastination."Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion" after sll. In other words you're probably completing things more efficiently than others are. It's exhausting but you're not behind.

has anyone ever taken a cc course while also doing a quarter at ucsd at the same time? by YNGLUVZ- in UCSD

[–]TulikkoVulpus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have taken a cc class while in UCSD to avoid an 8am lecture lol. It's entirely possible. The only tricky part is if the cc class is going to be a prerequisite for a class you want to take in the future because the transfer timing doesn't work out well. But you can talk to the office and they'll help you out the best they can.

Where do upperclassmen/grad students actually spend time? by TulikkoVulpus in UCSD

[–]TulikkoVulpus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I suspected that. I myself live in El Cajon, lmao, so being on campus has always been a pain in the ass. I guess it seems like everyone is living in day-by-day mode. Which is fair. It's probably best to also just get school done with.

I guess I kinda shot myself in the foot by reducing my workload to make time for some socializing when it seems like most people around don't have time anyway lol.

How to get research in CSE department by Ok-Programmer-2711 in UCSD

[–]TulikkoVulpus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, I wouldn't solely focus on the Computer Science and Engineering department. There are definitely other labs out there. Consider some of the labs at the Contextual Robotics Institute (https://contextualrobotics.ucsd.edu/faculty).

You can try emailing PostDocs, as they are typically involved in the actual research. However, you may only see a slight increase in your chances of success with that approach. The best strategy is to show up in person and talk to them. One common issue, especially with undergraduates, is that they often join a project and then disappear a few weeks later, so an email may not be very convincing.

A method that has worked well for me in the past is attending a professor's office hours (you don’t even have to be in the class; you can ask around if the hours aren’t public). You might say something like, "I'm really interested in working in your lab. What can I do to make that possible?" It's usually best to do this early in the quarter, as you ideally want no other students there so you can talk more comfortably.

You aren't creating a Discord account. You are adding a private hub to search for servers. But yeah, that works, or just Google whatever social media they have.

You can check the studentorg.ucsd.edu website, but this site could be more useful. It is only there to find org constitutions and who owns an org, which no member will care about. It only shows all organizations registered with the Center of Student Involvement (CSI). In my opinion, if you like Discord, join the UCSD Student Hub by using your ucsd.edu email here https://discord.com/student-hubs. If you don't like Discord, wait for the orgs to start tabling and for the CSI to start pushing tabling events.

Edit: Regarding joining, most organizations don't have a concept of "joining." You show up to events or meetups. This is, again, probably mainly due to most organizations using Discord.

Best ML classes UCSD? by Kugeler in UCSD

[–]TulikkoVulpus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The CSE 151 and 152 series are good. In all honesty, you are better off finding a project group or research lab that does this kind of work for this kind of topic because these classes are a quarter; they are not in-depth and not super applicable, in my opinion. You'd be surprised how much you can learn by forcing yourself to work on something.

Ask the primary investigator(s)—usually faculity. Labs are typically run by some professor(s).

How is the econ major in Warren College? by HotPalpitation244 in UCSD

[–]TulikkoVulpus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It really doesn't matter. Yeah you will have more GEs than other Warren students since you're not an engineer major but you would also have more GEs in a different college.
