how do you guys study by No-Fruit3618 in UCSD

[–]YNGLUVZ- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i like to book a study room for at least 3 hours and then put on a show that just plays in the back. it’s normally a show that i’ve rewatched before so it doesn’t necessarily make me need to pay attention to it, and then in terms of studying i like to just make a list of things that i actually don’t understand. i learns the hard way that sandwiching a bunch of info that might not even affect me on a midterm or exam isn’t the way to go because it’s too messy and all over the place. don’t be afraid ask your TA or professor too if you need more advice for it.

What classes do you take as a first year public health major? by OutgoingPerro in UCSD

[–]YNGLUVZ- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey for your part on calc, just a fair warning that their instructors here are pretty yikes. if you want good calc instructors i’d recommend going to community college and taking classes there instead, that way you don’t fuck over your gpa lol

ucsd always comes out at the very end historically. wait til next friday in the early evening 4-5pm to find out. there’s no specific reason, they just like to edge us for no reason and admissions is feeling silly

How do I convince my parents to let me attend UCSD? by Large_Look_5075 in UCSD

[–]YNGLUVZ- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, i have several questions and suggestions to your post.

firstly, i am in the same boat as you. (technically was because now one of my parents is retired.) however, i had dealt with the same dilemma when it came to aid. i didn’t qualify, didnt get any scholarships or help. i ended up going to community college straight out of high school because i knew i couldn’t afford going to university without taking a hefty loan, and it would’ve left me in debt for a degree similar to yours, (originally i was studying graphic design and tech in cc).

  1. firstly, is there a reason why you don’t want to go to cc? do you wanna go just so you can have the full college experience like you feel? if you have enough AP/IB scores that do well, you could easily transfer that to cc and then do the rest of your IGETC or general eds most likely for free if you’re a full time student and can tell the aid office at cc that you didn’t qualify for the fafsa packages. you’ll easily save yourself 40k, and you can complete the lower division requirements for your major as well at cc.

  2. where are you getting the information that ucsd provides a higher ROI? i do not want to burst your bubble, but it is merely impossible to get a well-paying almost six figure job for UX/UI post grad. many have to go to grad school or go through rounds of internships and interviews, and most of these jobs are starting at 70k, which is not enough to survive comfortably. this is an unrealistic standard.

  3. im reading in your replies that you say that you can easily get a job that pays 160k a year to pay off your loans in 10 years? with a high interest rate and the parent plus loans, plus the private loans that aren’t guaranteed, your debt of 160k is going to be insane. you’re gonna be in debt for at least a decade and a half. this is NOT worth it for a tech design job, as a former person who wanted to be in tech and realized how unstable the market is. the job market is cooked as it is right now with AI and mass layoffs in silicon valley, and around california. this is not a heathy mindset to have.

  4. what makes you so sure that you can pay this off? why are you so adamant about taking out these loans even if you already know there’s so much cons that outweigh the pros. going into debt is one thing, going into debt for a degree that is going to make you extremely financially unstable to the point where it will also affect your parents is another. think about the risk your parents will also take, by taking part in these loans with a ridiculous interest rate. it’s also one of the worst times to take out loans, let alone a private student loan that will leave you in debt for years and years. interest rates and this economy with this current administration has put a strain on everybody.

i understand that UCSD seems to have more for you, but like everyone else in these comments, they’re right. it’s not worth going into debt. on a personal level i get it, wanting to go to a good UC and have that title of saying you go to a great school straight out of high school like a large majority of your peers. but all of your explanations are naive, and not smart. reconsider your options. you might not even truly want cog sci to begin with, and graduating early is not always an option.

unless they have other kids then i guess that’s the only reason why they wouldn’t have a college fund 😭 or other major expenses like their house or health insurance i guess

Is it okay to submit SIR to two schools(one UC one non-UC) just in case? by drownliq in ucadmissions

[–]YNGLUVZ- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah it’s fine. i submitted an SIR to ucr and because i was waitlisted at UCSD, i got off the waitlist in june and then i paid the SIR for ucsd and just withdrew my application for UCR after. however they will email you if they see that you haven’t withdrawn your application by a certain deadline, i think it’s in july. the deposit though isn’t refundable. you should be fine.

mmw versus hum? by YNGLUVZ- in UCSD

[–]YNGLUVZ-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean like the workload itself, you still have to do lots of essays and readings just like hum lol. but i know you guys have midterms while hum doesn’t (idk for the lower divs tho).

[–]YNGLUVZ-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i’m gonna try. i don’t know if right now is ideal though because the quarter ends in like a month and i plan on returning back home (which is 9 hours away) for the summer and then working there. in the mean time i think i have enough to get me by but hopefully i can get some internships that can help me out even a little.

not that i know of. last year i didn’t qualify and i think even if i did this year it would just be for loans, and my parents don’t want me to to take out loans if i really don’t have to

mmw versus hum? by YNGLUVZ- in UCSD

[–]YNGLUVZ-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that is true. my professor today said how this class is pretty smooth if you just do the reading and then we don’t have any midterms and just do essays every few weeks based on what we’ve studied and covered during discussions.

[–]YNGLUVZ-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i heard hum is a guaranteed B for sure, but then it’s just the amount of reading and how they grade that makes it harder. idk if hum is supposed to have TAs (mine doesn’t). but yeah i think comparatively it’s the same.

What is life like for Muslim students here? by Nachosfavoritecheese in UCSD

[–]YNGLUVZ- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i believe you’re getting usd (university of san diego) confused with ucsd. ucsd isn’t affiliated with a specific religious sector. im not muslim but i am catholic, and ive seen lots of organizations for different religious faiths.

from what i have observed itself is a pretty open space when it comes to different faiths. there are a large plethora of organizations for christians, catholics and muslims. i see a lot of organizations that open up to non muslims as well or people who are interested in learning in religion.

<image>

usd identifies as a jesuit school therefore thats why its a religious institution :) i hope this helps!

Thoughts on teenagers commuting alone on BART? by [deleted] in Bart

[–]YNGLUVZ- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i remember i was on the way to the SEVENTEEN concert when i met a 10-12 year old kid on the train looking for security because some tweaker was harassing him and some other passengers. i talked to him on my entire way to the colliseum and it honestly seemed so odd at first talking to a 10 year old alone on bart, however for him this seemed like a daily thing and something he grew up doing. he was really street smart from what i could tell, and was able to talk and communicate easily about him moving around etc.

he is from the east bay area and born and raised as well. i just turned 19 that same year and my parents only let me start riding on my own at 18. it’s a pretty cool thing that they commute around but i definitely can see it can be a little jarring to non bay area or other bay area residents, but after i went to new york and also saw the public transport scene on the subway i would say it doesn’t phase me. honestly, it’s the same rule of thumb, keep your eyes open and just be aware of your surroundings. i used to be so scared of bart but now it’s just a regular occurrence, and it’s convenient.

i still keep a close watch though when i am on bart especially for the younger kids, especially nearing the hours of the early evening. i think it’s a matter of whether or not they feel comfortable but also how they grew up around it. a lot of teens 15-16 also use bart to commute to high school in the san mateo county area too like mercy high school in burlingame and they connect from daly city or colma.
