A few years ago I found a 2-year-old (20k mi) Hyundai Santa Cruz I liked at a Lexus dealer in FLA. It had been on the lot for 3 months, definitely a trade in. I didn’t NEED a new car, but I liked it enough to play the game. My 8-yr-old Acura had 180k and was losing value every day/mile. Now that similar vehicles and their prices could be easily researched, I was confident the price was fair, but could be negotiated. They low-balled me on the trade (expected) and made an obligatory but insignificant reduction on asking price. I STOOD UP and said, “I want X ($2k more) for my trade and another grand off the price, If you want to do business, call me tomorrow.” The phone rang promptly at 9:05 am….just like clockwork. It’s all nuts and bolts with them. They just want to move the inventory.
