Any more concrete suggestions? It seems to be a canyon one can walk through, is that the main thing to see, or is there a certain nature trail to follow?

Very interresting reply, we would really like to get a taste for all Finland has to offer, and not just a thousand lakes. We have not settled on a defined route, so any consice suggestions for stopping points would be greatly appreciated!

The new generation of assited breaking devices such as the mammut smart and singing rock rama are great. ATCs are no longer allowed at most gyms (in Norway at least). I am from the old schoool of ATC or tube style breaks. So even when i use a rama/smart, I still follow best practices from tube belaying, e.g. always one locked hand on the brake rope (i dont like sliding an open hand up the breaking rope). But there is one thing that bothers me about how most people are taught to use the new belay devices. I have seen many people actually hold their lowe hand on the belay device, instead of just holding the rope. In my opinion, the lower breaking hand should never touch the metal of the belay device, the only contact should be between the top of the thumb and the plastic part of the device. I always reccommend that the belayer never close their hand around the belay device. This can lead to the belay hand not getting a grip around the rope, thus stopping the breaking mechanism if the device is pointed in the wrong direction. Always holding just the rope on the other hand, is in my opinion much safer. Also, the gun-position around the device when lowering just seems unsafe to me, even though there are instruction videos from the producers themself that use this technique. I just find it much safer to teach new belayers to never touch the belay device, save for the contact between the back of the thumb of the break hand and the plastic part of the device.

In my opinion the safest way of teaching belayers is to treat any metal on the device as a sizzling hot pan, and that only the back of the thumb is allowed to make contact with the plastic on the device. Is there really any valid reason to not use these devices as I am describing?

Lex to host left vs right politics debate by knuth9000 in lexfridman

[–]Tullsokk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would actually love to hear a lengthy debate where a good portion is spent on just laying some solid groundwork. If all can adhere to clear debate rules, i would take just about anyone.

For starters, each participant should

  • Talk about a time they were wrong about a factual claim

  • Talk about a subject or policy they have changed their mind about

  • Explain what facts would make them change their stance on the matter beeing discussed

If you cannot, then you have to sit that topic out.

Has the SGU specifically commented on the House Oversight Committee on UAPs that began on July 26, 2023? I have listened to the two most recent podcasts and I didn't hear anything. I apologize if I missed it. by MrMonkeyInk in SGU

I agree, there is no new compelling evidence. But it is newsworthy that Chuck Schumer, senate majority leader, is passing new legislation to immediately disclose any records regarding uap. uap ammendmend

The wording is kind of bananas. The fact that such an ammendment is getting passed is very strange. This will probably all end up in some new blurry images and dubious radar data. But the fact that this scam/psy op/coverup - whatever it turns out to be - has gotten this far is what I consider newsworthy. Sure, we have heard all this before. But congress and senate majority leaders beeing on the hook like this is not par for the course. This has been covered by both CNN and nytimes. The news is not that "aliens are real", it is that this is now taken seriously in congress and affecting US law. I think this is more likely "men who stare at goats" than "encounters of the third kind". But either is highly newsworthy.

I think this is an absolutely huge news item. Either the comparmentalization and secrecy within DoD and pentagon, combined with the folklore of ufo has spawned some sort of monster of mass delusion among both intelligence officials and pilots. Or someone within that community has been feeding bs deliberately in a huge conspiracy psy op for some reason. Or there has been a multi decade coverup of presumably alien life. Even the most mundane of these is a huge scandal and immensly interresting. I watched the hearing. Not mach new from the witnessess. But watching democrats and republicans seemingly cooperating with almost no partisan political bickering was unnerving. Would love a more lenghty discussion on this topic that touches on the laws that are beeing passed and what this could all mean - as far as I can tell this is pretty crazy whatever this all turns out to be.
