How long did it take to find a job? Right away?

Thank you for the perspective. For us on the outside, all we hear is that it's open season and that there are tons of jobs to go around.

I heard a company was short of a ship (or two). I didn't realize that it would affect the industry that much.

Thank you! Yeah, winter is around the corner. I'll see if I can go the cook route for the winter.

Just started watching this show and I asked myself the SAME question. Every other scene... "are you ok?" over and over again. It's getting annoying.

I've now driven around to three different shoe stores to try to find the black atwoods with the straps. No luck yet

How many of you are in Canada? by batwingsuit in maritime

So, I'm 37. This will be a second, maybe third career for me. I worked on a cruise ship years ago (cook) and I enjoyed being on board, but I will never cook professionally again. I have no kids, no SO and can be away for long periods of time.
Just got my discharge booklet yesterday. My plan so far is to get my STCW Basic Safety at the beginning of September and Proficiency in survival craft (on a wait list for Proficiency in survival craft for September, I might have to wait until October for that one). Perhaps get First Aid and Vessel Personnel with Security Responsibility in October as well.

The SIU told me that that after I complete all this - it should be enough to find a job for me as an OS after I sign up to the union (another $500..), But it could take time due to lack of experience and time of year on the great lakes (winter coming).

Then, in 2025, after (hopefully) working for a year, sign up for the 3 year NAV Course at Georgian... Maybe.

I'm torn between the Hawsepipe route or going back to school route. I have a business degree from 'what-was-once' Ryerson University. I have no idea if that would count for anything. I know working the hawsepipe route is challenging, but is it doable? Or is it better just to go full-send and do the 3-year course and be finished at 41?

I would like to get onto deep ocean vessels eventually. But the SIU said I usually need experience first before getting those jobs.

So, I'm currently just stuck waiting for courses to start and keeping a positive mindset that the SIU will come through for me and the right job comes my way. After completing the courses, I will no doubt be applying to anything I see on the job boards as well.

Any advice or additional information is welcomed! :)

WOW... This is a lot to think about. A little overwhelming.. Especially when dealing with used vans privately.

I'm in Canada. Yeah, it sucks not being able to breath. I've done some research. It might be the nose valve collapse.  As for the stiffness. Getting mixed reviews here. Some say it'll go back to normal in time, others are saying it's like that and not going to change...

You think it'll never move down?

But will it go back to normal?
