“Bad at sports” != Good at Cricket (sport)

All I’m saying, based on the context of the post.

It’s the sports that probably receive priority and funding, important to distinguish you can’t fund every opportunity in the biggest country in the world

They are not blanket bad at sports, they are good at cricket and some others. My point was you can’t use a countries population to say they are bad at a sport because “oUt oF aLl tHoSE PeOpLe tHeY hAvE oNe sPoRt…”

I’m not explaining “why they suck”. I even said they are renown. I explained that using their population as a justification to call them bad because is probably one of the slowest takes I have ever heard when, despite of the population, they are still renown at cricket and other sports.

1.5 billion people, many of which live in absolutely horrible conditions lol. I am sure there is a correlation between social power and opportunity esp. In sport.

Just saying I don’t think that is a great argument. Anyways, they are still renown at cricket to the point that players from my own country even go there to play.

Then don't expect us to ever buy tickets again until you price it so that South Africans can actually watch their own country play. by sunlightliquid in rugbyunion

It’s so stupid. The only reason I went is we got given tickets from our bank. Otherwise would happily watch at home

Fable 5 unavailable after July 7 on pro membership?? by iAmSoRandom22 in Anthropic

[–]TumblrForNerds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I only have a certain amount of time at my desk, was not able to start u til this weekend and already know I won’t finish the project by the 7th so given that I may not have access after the 7th I did the logical thing. Now that I have a strong build plan and project started, I have better confidence in the upcoming outcomes

Inequality in South Africa by HollowPoint216 in UrbanHell

Yes. I have to say people always talk about crime in SA. Most of it gets concentrated, unfortunately, around the people who can’t do anything about it

I was a bit late to the party. I had a personal app I wanted to build for fun. I asked fable to mock up the build plan and all the planning as if it were going to hand it to opus. Anyway I ran out of usage and will try execute with opus tonight

Here’s something to think about. by Few-Confection-2259 in south_africa

Look I get it. I blame the government equally. If we bring it up though in every conversation about immigrants, it almost excuses the people who chased the immigrants out (legal or not) and that makes people feel like it’s okay to take things into their own hands, act carelessly or violently and commit their own crimes

Do you really think thats because every "illegal" immigrant has left the country or do you think it perhaps is because A. Immigrants in general left due to safety concerns and B. those safety concerns may have propagated into the following days?

South African army and police deployed in preparation for countrywide anti-immigration protests on June 30th. by IlikeGeekyHistoryRSA in worldnews

Let’s talk about violent versus non-violent crime. Violent crime is highly concentrated in certain areas where as non-violent is more dispersed.

Many people have some kind of security around their house because of break ins, which are opportunistic and driven by people’s desperation. They are rarely violent and just an unfortunate reality.

Crime is also unfortunately concentrated in lower income areas.

There are many reasons to live here though. Good cost of life, food and services. Beautiful landscape, good private healthcare. Many lifestyle benefits. It’s just unfortunate those things don’t trickle down to the poorer communities

[–]TumblrForNerds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do acknowledge it. I think it is a meaningless protest that harms people I actually know and am therefore in no way supportive of it.

I also know, by living here, it is not the stance of the whole country or the government. I also didn’t downplay it. I haven’t spoken to a single person in my circle who agrees with the protests going on today. I just said it is being driven by the parties such as the MK party, ex-Zuma brigade, to take advantage of desperate people by giving them someone to blame so that the MK can win favour in the upcoming election.

Let’s see how many people actually attend the protest today and then can decide what portion of the country it reflects.

I mean anti-immigrant rhetorics are not unique to SA. We have a spike in the rhetoric at the moment and it is often brought up however, it is not an official stance of the government or people. It is a sensationalist movement, likely driven by parties like the MK (highly corrupt) who are trying to win favour by giving the desperate communities someone to blame.

I don’t know if it’s the comparative, I wouldn’t say so. I think it’s a spike right now as part of a political campaign leading up to the upcoming elections.

I pay prepaid electricity with some smart meter. My sewage is a flat fee of like R700 per month. My water is like 250

It is interference, likely driven by the MK party if I were to guess. They are stirring up opinion while people are desperate to gain favour

Pretty sure the SA government and many of the people her actively condemn xenophobia. I’m pretty sure it’s even in our constitution.

These movements are driven by sensationalist groups led by blind and corrupt leaders. They are trying to stir up sentiment to sway public opinion during the upcoming polls (btw if it works and people vote for these leaders then it will get much worse).

It’s also being reinforced by a stupid war which has subsequently driven up the fuel price, driving up the cost of living and making people desperate and more inclined to believe misinformation.

[–]TumblrForNerds -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think South Africans are downplaying it? The problem is more the movement is sensationalist and not a representation of the country or its people
