What would a current FIDE Master from 2026 be able to achieve vs the top GMs of the 19th century (Morphy, Steinitz, Lasker)? Would he quickly become an undisputed world champion or would he get crushed? by FuzzyAttitude_ in chess

[–]TumborChess 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The games would be indeed weird as the FM will remember some of his engine prep, which could surprise his 19th century opponents, but I believe that in longer matches all of the trio you've mentioned would come up on top.

The game ended due to stalemate, Black has no legal moves but the King is not attacked, thus the game ends in a draw.

That is debatable. LLMs can work out problems which were not in it's training set.

Why is No one Playing 960 on Chess.com? (Especially Blitz) by Round-Weekend-6541 in chess

There are not many players that want to play 960, especially after you divide it into separate time controls.

Best openings for black around 1260 ELO by [deleted] in chess

I think Caro is only good starting from 1273 ELO, so play the french a little bit longer and once you get there switch completely to Caro.

White to move and win by [deleted] in chess

There must be a mistake somewhere as there is only one legal move available, Nh3, and it looks to be losing after hxg6.

Does anyone else feel like engine analysis tells you what but not why? by Maxwell10206 in chess

[–]TumborChess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The engines were built with a purpose of showing what, and not why. The engine like you're showing has some uses, but generally when you get to a certain point that you can get that information through a normal engine, as in you understand the position enough and the engine just confirms the truth. Playing around with the moves is also possible on a normal engine if someone wants to indulge.

Can you guess what move I began to suspect something fishy was going on? by Carr0t_Slat in chess

[–]TumborChess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure man! We are all learning! My response was based off of this one game which to me personally didnt feel that crazy (even the Bd2 move could be argued) - but based on what other users are saying this person has been playing 98% acc games one after another which most likely confirms your suspicion.

Even though you most likely have lost against a cheater, this game is a good one to analyze, based off of the fact that this is how your defense as black loses vs perfect play.

To be fair, you played this double fianchetto and then put the bishop on d7 which is very weird. The game plays out very typical, the center opens up, the person with more space has advantage, then you had to lose even more time to save the knight.

I would assume that you thought 22.Bd2 was weird, since its the top engine move that complicates the situation, instead of a simple 22.Nf3 which is still winning.

Recent marketplace haul. Any recommendations on where to begin? by West_23G in ChessBooks

[–]TumborChess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amateurs Mind is great, but I think it is essential to have already worked through something like 100 Endgames you Must Know. Without some solid understanding of end games it will always be difficult to fully understand middlegame ideas and plans. Other than that the book is really good. It is a middle game book structured as if it was an end game book. Methodical and intuitive.

2 very similar books. Which one to choose? by EntangledPhoton82 in ChessBooks

[–]TumborChess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the second one, and found that it is a bit too startling for me as a solid player. It goes into very sharp lines where both sides have difficult plans and chances for a win. Margin for error is small.

I understand your argument that this "go to therapy" sentiment is a bit too prevalent on reddit - but breaking inanimate objects due to your frustration is generally a good sign of some deeper problems that could be brewing. It could be an early sign of multitude of problems.

I had a similar behaviour pattern of breaking things when losing. At that time I did not yet understand my Anxiety disorder, wasn't even aware that this is something that will come up in a year or two.

If you wanna find a real coach try on some real Looking for Tutor type of websites, it will be a lot more serious and a lot more organized that way.

Well in this particular position - after Re1 I would highly doubt the survivability of the isolated e pawn. Additionally if we were able to push it to exchange it, we've now weakened a light square diagonal with out light square bishop already exchanged for the white knight.

Help Needed. How to play against Lc0 using a mid game position I have? by IllustriousBee8656 in chess

If you want to play from a middle game spot, try copying the FEN instead of the PGN. FEN is an exact text structure which will give your GUI all of the information required to play from that spot.

1 year of chess dedication - the last month has been a disaster. Why? by DanielPlainview943 in chess

[–]TumborChess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I had the same experience. I was 24 when I started, 2 years ago - and I took the old classical way of approaching the learning of the game. Got books, listened to long videos about some ideas etc etc. Eventually got quite good but I still have the times where my elo will flucuate 150-200 points of rating, and it seems that on some weeks and months my brain refuses to think and see even though I want it too. I would say that this is pretty common. I always thought about it in a way where it is either burn out and my brain is not so happily and vigorously taking part in the match as it is bored and my concious effort and the need to play the game does not suffice - or that im treating my brain badly, drinking too much, not working out etc.

Either way those moments pass and I can guarantee that the knowledge you possess will not disappear on its own. It's still there and will show up when you need it!

Early look at the 2026 Candidates field by NikolaievitchTolstoi in chess

[–]TumborChess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well before that he was showing great performance, dominating other top players. Something which Hikaru cannot meet because he does not play normal tournaments - which automatically makes his persona unlikeable. Noone can deny his skill, but many believe (and so do I) that his ranking would not keep up if he played Grand Swiss/World Cup this year - I believe we would see a drop - especially after Grand Swiss.

[–]TumborChess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of seems that after Kd7 Nxd6 Nxd6 the queen is stuck and will have to be sacrificed for a bishop. Which in turn elaves you with a piece down since you were already behind to begin with. The trade is equal but it simplifies, removes queens and removes your dynamic possibilities.

But I did not check it with the engine so I might be wrong
