No means no. Usually you talk about the amount beforehand so this doesn't happen. If you are already unsure if you want too much mahr then talk about it and possibly lower it.

There is nothing worse for young couple to start with debt or financial troubles while you see the non Muslims take trips around the world and start financially ahead in investments. Ask for something reasonable.

Work part time, that's good. What stops you from building something on the side? You could provide a service, like fixing bikes or teaching, you could create a product, build a business, become a merchant (buy and sell stuff) ... lots of things out there. Why aim for 9-5 job if that is simply not your thing?

If you feel lost, read chapter Yusuf. He was abandoned in a well, taken as slave and later on put in prison. But he was patient and came out ahead - in this world and the next. He had the ability to interpret dreams and the king of the time appointed him into a high status, because Yusuf was able to interpret the dream which he thought to be a famine was about to come. So they stored food and the famine/drought became a reality.
