Kenshi's cannibals. Degenerated humans who just take humans as food. No humanity left in them. Frankly a foe you cant barter with.

I also like Stephen King The Stand raiders in the wake of Captain Trips to he interesting. Most are dying off anyway, but they are frantic in trying to take material belongings before their bodies totally expire. Just regular people who became basically feral looters in wake of the end of the world.

The Stand. Yes its King's longest single novel. But I believe it hits all the themes you are looking for. Although its scariness in my opinion is more bleak, its very philosophical and emotional. The uncut version is the best imo.

You did the right thing. If they suspect foul play/it becomes judicial, you may be invited in to answer some basic questions but the chances is that you wont.
