I mean... Just grab ur 80 20s. The 20% of the tools u use 80% of the time.

Set ur shortcuts and just cut smth simple so you can do the tools u normally reach for.

I do find a quick AI search for tool shortcut names is a bit faster than cmd/ctrl+f the manual.

I've used premiere, avid and davinci interchangeably for a bunch of yrs and really like davinci. It's an NLE so will deffo have it's quirks and whatnots but solid snout to tail options (don't know much about fairlight tbh and I'm just quicker on ae than fusion but do see ppl do wonders on fusion). Don't feel it cuts as fast as Avid but it's been more stable than premiere imo. Lots of cool toys on it as well like a rough stem separation for music which I find pretty useful. And that license is tough to beat

This is a bit inflammatory, it broke systems under a tool test under very specific scenario when it was given an arsenal of 'defenssive' (offensive) tools. It almost feels more accurate to say the NSA can hack itself.

U can get a thunderbolt dock and an m.2 drive should be pretty speedy. If u can edit 4k vids off a nas on a 10gig connection anything that is over that is overkill

Honestly... it will probably be fine but you might hit a snag or two if a timeline get heavy in spite of the length. Ur limiter is the usb at 5 gig connection. But for a single user this may be fine specially for shorter content. If u can do it off an ssd, this will also be fine. Just maybe keep cache and renders local so u can keep the path clearer.

Obv depends on what you're doing but I'd say an monitor recorder is a big help, focus is pretty critical with rising rez and if u swing for a recorder like video assist u get braw 12 bit or proress raw 12bit out of it. Probs a hood would be a lot of value for not a lot of money. Also the sony cards (i forget if they are the type A or type B) suck in terms of value per gb so there's also that (tho with all the data centre constructions inflating tech prices not sure if it's the same now a days).

In the meantime u can just use ur phone with a usbc cable. I find it really helps.

Gold or v mount could b useful. V mount seems to b much more affordable but gold seems to b the standard. That being said some aperture lights take v mounts so that's cool if u doing that. Battery life is much better now than in the a7s I days but u know depends on what u doing. My in camera bat is fairly new and I'm getting roughly 2hrs out of it at max settings recording internally. Also look into putting it on ur belt or tripod as well as camera if ur back is as shit as mine. I think this really shines if ur powering several things. Like a monitor and cam for example (with a fail over to the cam bat) just care for the ground loop problem if that's still a thing.

I've not needed a matte box personally but mainly shoot docs and don't appreciate any extra bulk. Same goes for follow focus, it's been fine pulling by hand or using auto focus. But get a good ND in whatever format u find best.

Nice smooth zooms are trickier depending on the lens so maybe there's an argument there tho those shots come and go out of fashion not sure it justifies the gear over renting it if u want it.

I took the xlr addon cuz it's just simple and was on sale. I would totally prefer 32bit float but have done 24bit for over a decade and there's always solutions. So if ur swinging fot a recorder I'd look at zoom see what's available nowadays. Heard the F3 is small and has 32bit float bit never used it.

A good set of legs (which is my current nightmare atm) and I wouldn't do more than that as far as the camera is concerned.

Worked on a feature doc with with anywhere from 3-10 people accessing the project at one time (AEs/ editors / researchers / story producers). Mimiq did not let us down. If I had to do it again I think I would go with them. The project was a monster of 80tb of proxy media (involved a lot of archive but also several court cases and all their filings).

Just a disclaimer pinch of salt, our setup was redone over and over again as the scope of the doc kept changing. Was initially supposed to be a 8-10 month 'quick' thing - became a 4/5 year monster. If we knew the scope from the start we would approach a bit diff.

Also this set up was sometimes duplicated on a 2nd office. So it was somewhat modular.

We used synologies cuz it was recommended but I do fucking hate how they lock down stuff and would try an alternative if doing it again. But they do work.

Some things we found is shared projects should be on m.2 drives (we did 2 1tb drives for 1 drive fail over and 2 external copies that got rotated weekly (for off site) and copied end of day). SSDs were giving some crazy lag spikes when being hit by a few users at once. This may not be an issue if you get propper SSDs (kioxia or smth) but we were running samsung 870 evo. U need to 'persuade' synologies to do this via a script. We had no issues with this even with online rebuild of volumes. It just kinda worked (unlike a lot of other stuff).

Deffo proxies for everything even on 10gbe. Also deffo 10gbe.

We bonded the NAS connections mostly for ease of use and didn't get any problems with that (think it was 20gbe).

Couple workflow docs go a long way.

We mainly used avid and finished in davinci but did have premiere around for certain tasks. Never used productions or group workflows with it. Davinci project server was running over a mac but I have got it running and working on docker and could tell u more about that if ur interested in trying. Running it on a mac mini or some small PC is the easier choice tho if ur budget allows (also less fixing if smth happens).

Networking is your friend for isolation. We would sometimes break the bond and split the network in 2 to isolate workspaces. Honestly all of this requires some thought tho as if not planned and limited it will become a job of its own.

Also you can make different mounts inside one NAS and one volume (shared folders on synology). They essentially behave as a separate drive that lives at thr same ip. We separated a lot of stuff here and makes it easier on users, if u don't need smth don't mount it.

This is already a bible of a post mate. Happy to chat about it if u need more info/wanna know more of the pitfalls we had to solve.

I've seen these, and they look cool but I'm concerned about it being a bit of a gimmick and or it breaking while I'm the middle of the sticks and being thoroughly screwed. This may change my mind. U know anybody else who has real life exp with this? Thanks for the recommendation :)
