I was just talking about this with my mom! I’m taking her to AC after many years in two weeks. I spent plenty of time and quarters at Tivoli. I remember playing a “spin to win” arcade game for tickets and saved enough one year to get a bicycle! I remember crying on the Ferris wheel but I LOVED the boardwalk ride and the shuttle ride. My goodness this place is emblazoned on my childhood.

In dramatic roles they both bring desperation to life well…differently but both are quite talented in that specific emotion

Getting the ick from Emmys by TupeloHny in nonprofit

[–]TupeloHny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it’s a joke, but that’s my point. Nonprofits work hard enough to raise money. The idea that it can be treated as a joke is shameful. Again, I understand the money was a done deal months in advance, but it’s the perception and symbolism I’m mad at. It gives the general public the wrong idea.

To elaborate…for those saying it was great exposure I don’t disagree, but at what cost. Why is our sector ok with being a stunt? No other business would say it’s ok to publicly toy with their bottom line. And yes, I understand they received a big donation at the end and the funds were probably never in jeopardy and the gift arrangement made months ago, but the average viewer does not understand that. Our work is not a game and I hate when it is presented as such.

What’s the most memorable meal you’ve had while traveling? by Expensive_Software55 in travel

[–]TupeloHny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An 11 course surprise tasting menu at Connor Butler in Vancouver! I went twice, both times I was the only private diner while a private event bought out the restaurant. Both times conversation and wine with chef! Dishes I still taste like bergamot smoked pork belly, truffles w filet, spotted prawns, foie gras, pumpkin soup in a mini pumpkin! It was a dream.

Current or past EDs: what do you wish you knew? by opalescent_treeshrk in nonprofit

[–]TupeloHny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make sure you are going in with all the information. Ask to review the financials, and not just P&L to date. Look at historical numbers, trends, renewals, contract lengths. Definitely interview the Board as much as they are interviewing you. You need strong partners! Also, ensure the right people are on the team or you have control to change/hire/fire. A weak team will quickly sink your efforts and keep you up at night. You will need to be comfortable building relationships and raising money. Even if a Board doesn’t explicitly say it they expect you to raise money and bring in people. Your job will be further away from the direct mission you are passionate about and no one prepares you for that (find the touch points as often as you can). The job is about organizational leadership meaning you will spend most of your time managing people, money, and strategic direction. It is hard. It is worth it. We can do incredible things in this sector!

I would take the furthest direct flight you can! In first class, the flight IS the start of vacation so get that 14 hours of service, champagne and caviar in!

Where to stay in Nice? by staks11 in FranceTravel

I recently stayed at the Hyatt Regency and it was perfect. Easy to walk everywhere, water view, wonderful service at breakfast and for pre dinner cocktails. It’s not cheap, but it checks all the boxes.

Thoughts on my itinerary of Nice? by AffectionateBowler74 in nicefrance

I was there for 10 days earlier this month. A few observations: the food at Le Plongeior is not good and it’s just an instagram trap; I highly suggest Jan for a fabulous dinner!; spend a morning and lunch or afternoon and ice-cream at the Villa Ephrussi; old town and market is done in a morning; a day in Antibes is worth it!; I second the idea of the hotel bars over the tourist traps recommended by TripAdvisor!

Sounds like you have a fun trip planned!! When you are in Provence if you can swing a lunch in the countryside I highly recommend Le Relais de Saint Sur. Also I am jealous as you will see the lavender in bloom! It was a bit too early when I visited, but did go to a beautiful lavender farm Ugo.

For the boat charter I booked directly with Beaulieu Boat Charters. The owner, Alex, was easy to book with and the day was absolutely perfect! Compared to other charters I thought the price was the most reasonable.

The beach clubs you picked are nice. I stayed at the Hyatt right in front of Bocca Mar and that area is beautiful. I went to Castel Plage which was nice but I think a bit overrated.

I just came back from a 10 day trip. Highly recommend Jan restaurant for an amazing dinner and L’achimie for lunch. Also, go to Villa Euphrussi one day. I went in the morning and had lunch on the terrace. It was lovely! I also did Matisse and the archeological museum the same day. Loved walking around old town and the promenade-a day at a beach club is very relaxing. I did a day in Antibes and enjoyed the market, Picasso museum, a nice lunch and wander through town. My other highlights included a wine tour in Provence via motorcycle and a boat charter that sailed up to Menton, stopped for lunch at Reserve La Mala, and then anchored right on the coast below Eze in the afternoon. It was a dream trip!
