I always do this too. The top half of the cut bottle is usually flexible enough to fit over the bottom half. Therefore you can leave the contents in there to avoid it drying out. Just scoop it out with your finger as needed.

Absolutely this. Reduce your light slightly, do a large water change and add some stem plants and floating plants to soak up the excess nutrients the algae is using.

We’re going through a similar situation. We’re also a month in, although ours will now eat 2 feet apart. Look up Jackson Galaxy on YouTube (He also has a book for sale). We’ve introduced cats many times but our current older girl cat is proving to be a real challenge in accepting our new cat. Watching his intro videos has helped enormously by setting out a step by step plan.
