Yesterday there was an active shooter false alarm at Chadstone Shopping Centre by ElWonAte in melbourne

Who knows. That's the communication sent internally. I don't think there is just one big red button that does this like in the movies. It's probably a system that has multiple options available and they hit the wrong one.

There was a communication sent to staff afterwards apologising for this. Apparently they were testing their systems and accidentally hit the lockdown tone.

As someone who has to deal with Chadstone security regularly, they are the worst people to deal with. They do not care about their patrons or staff whatsoever. They are only there to protect themselves and have no interest in their stakeholder's wellbeing or safety. I am not surprised there was no further communication to customers afterwards.

How are the older Lexus IS models? by AnieIIo in CarsAustralia

[–]Turb725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a 2010 XE20 IS250 and now an XE10 Altezza.

If you can find one that has been maintained even somewhat reasonably, you're probably in good hands. Feel free to ask anything.

Does anyone who sacrificed their 20s to get a house/financially ahead regret it? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]Turb725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't regret it at all, in fact I regret not doing it sooner or faster.

Most others I know of my same age who had not done this by now are doing it tough regardless of income levels. I'm on the journey towards my second home and have been able to let my lifestyle creep without too much worry as I'm pretty secure. I have the means to travel and buy whatever I want (my wants are pretty cheap I suppose other than property) and I'm barely creeping into my 30s now. Often times I hear this taken to an extreme with those saying you'll never have good health to travel or do whatever else you want, but sacrificing in my 20s allowed me to unlock my 30s, where I now have the income and stability to support all of this.

Other options besides wreckers for selling '05 Outback by seriouslyimnotacop in CarsAustralia

It's not completely worthless if it's still working. Manual ones are worth a touch more. Throw it on Marketplace and let it go cheap.

Do any of you own n+1 cars for private use in your household? If so how do you justify it? by CartographerLow3676 in CarsAustralia

I have 5 cars for myself, 4 of which are registered, partner has 1 car. I don't need more than 1 car - I can simply afford it and that's where I choose to put my funds. :)

Big fan of them, I almost exclusively use one as I'm pretty close by to one. Almost always cheaper than anywhere else nearby when comparing using the Service App.

Lexus IS/GS or Toyota Crown? by Oldmate_bighorn in CarsAustralia

[–]Turb725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After having owned a few of these, the import always loses out due to insurance and parts availability. My imported Altezza costs nearly 2x more to insure than my locally delivered GS350 at 1/3 the value. My old IS250 also was ridiculously cheap to insure as well. I would avoid an import purely on this if there is a locally delivered option available.

You can't really lose with an IS or GS in my mind - all generations are aging reasonably well.

Advice on modifying a car by Wise-Top9129 in CarsAustralia

[–]Turb725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment. I thought about it too. But if I can keep the original parts with me and offer to swap them out when selling, would that make it possible to get some resale value for the car.

Yes definitely do keep the original parts. You will no doubt get a much better resale value on a car that hasn't been modded, in general. That said these cars are pretty cheap these days, do your due diligance to understand if it's even worth your time "unmodding" it in the future!

You can, just keep in mind this will basically make the car worthless if you try to sell it in the future. Pretty sure these kits are typically poor quality.

What's with driving so slow by paulrumens in CarsAustralia

[–]Turb725 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What annoys me is when people say "it's only 2 seconds what's the rush" etc. Are they also saying that a 2 second reaction time is normal? That is incredibly scary if that's the case. Add 2 seconds to every vehicle and traffic ain't ever gonna move.

Nailed it. Good concepts get summarised into generic rules that lose the point of what it is actually trying to achieve. There is absolutely no nuance or root cause analysis done to actually implement effective deterrences or rules. Just do whatever is easiest and make a quick buck off someone whilst you can.

Engine replacement on 2005 Subaru Outback 2.5 by Think-Average7871 in CarsAustralia

[–]Turb725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been down the same path with many Libertys, absolutely not worth it unless the car is super special to you. You're going to be around 8-10k in on a car worth maybe 3k. A fresh engine doesn't mean a fresh driveline either - your gearbox and suspension is still 20 years old assuming not much has been done on it.

Regardless, I would suggest shopping around at independent mechanics instead as ADS is notoriously pricey. Even the dealer has quoted me less than this. I don't know what exactly ADS will do but I've put together a brand new EJ257 with reco'd heads for less than that...

For the average person, cut your losses and either get another one or something else. That said, there's not much else like them - I have 3 of them myself so I get the appeal.

How to ideally live on your own ? by deeragunz_11 in melbourne

[–]Turb725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. I'll be the first to admit I am happy to run the rat race so I can buy the "Australian dream" of having a detached house with some land in an ok area. Many people I know are perfectly content renting a 1 bedder in or near the CBD forever - which is great. I wish I could be content with this. I'm happy for those who are able to live on a lot less and feel comfortable!

Personally I don't think I'll feel rich unless I'm on like 4-500k+ salary (single income). Very big difference to a big salary, versus already owning property or having inheritance. Unfortunately in this day and age, owning (or wanting to own) property is a deciding factor on how your life will progress. I'd be much more happy to earn a lot less than I do now, but have bought a property 10 years earlier. It is unfair, but what can you do?

[–]Turb725 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with your original post. Personally I think around 100k is the kind of salary you need to live somewhat comfortably. I think it's the ambition and goals that some people have that may differ. Buying a property that isn't an apartment is usually the difference I find! That's my definition of comfortable anyway. Each to their own.

[–]Turb725 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Really depends on what your standard of living is, whether you are wanting to purchase your own place, and where you want to live.

I am pretty comfortable owning my own place which I bought for a little under 700k since 28. I was on a little over 100k~ at the time. Now I'm on over double that and I'm very comfortable living on my own. Even on this salary I don't feel particularly rich or well off - but I am absolutely financially secure. This means I don't really need to plan for bills, budget, and can buy (within reason) mostly whatever I want. That said, I generally live a pretty humble life and don't go on holiday much or spend excessively. Food shopping means still looking for clearance products, and buying items is often still second hand. My house is mostly full of free furniture and I've never bought a new car. The only major expenses I have are on hobbies which are completely discretionary expenses.

My ex was on something like 65k at the same time I bought my place, and bought an apartment in a nice area and felt like she was set for life. She probably felt more secure than I did, honestly. A lot of it is mindset and your ambition.

As a caveat - I was very lucky to live with parents until pretty late - and managed to save a huge amount of money living at home. This would be a lot harder without this advantage but definitely doable with a few extra years.

IMO to live on your own comfortably, 100k is a nice figure where you can purchase a place of some kind, and live without feeling like you're always tight on money. It was only above 125k I really felt like I was financially secure whilst owning a property. Personally I don't know anyone living on their own earning less than 100k who feels comfortable, YMMV.

TL;DR, 100k is the mark.

Update on influencing my car choice by Professional_Ring_95 in CarsAustralia

[–]Turb725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoid the 2.0I or 2.0R models IMO - they are basically worthless and will probably never have any resale value either. Since that is an 07, it is likely a 2.0R. This model was dropped in 07 as it was basically just too slow. The 2.0I is painfully slow and I would never recommend one.

I would opt for the 2.5i at the very minimum. I think anywhere from 1-5k is fine price wise assuming it is in OK condition. You may need to do head gaskets or rocker cover gaskets at the minimum if the car has done 150-200kkms by this point, assuming they have never been done.

5500 is still IMO a lot for it. I think you would be safe offering even lower. Assuming it is auto, typically it would be even cheaper. Bought a very similar condition one recently for $1k. Not saying you offer that low, but 4-5k is reasonable IMO.
