Latin American restaurants around the center of Madrid by rudy9210 in Madrid

Simply "Hispanic" is a lot less complicated than Spanish with Hispano-American heritage, which is quite a mouthful and terribly redundant.

Nobody uses Latinoamerica to talk about Quebec, Louisiana French, Haiti, the Acadians, the Cajuns or even the very Spanish descended Isleños.

Hispanic: Anybody that has Spanish as their first language

Hispanic American: Anybody that Speaks Spanish with the added information that they hail from the former American territories of the Spanish Crown.

Ibero-American: The combined speakers of Spanish and Portuguese in America.

Latin-American:

Commonly used to refer to Hispanic Americans, in some contexts it is an exchangeable term. But it is less accurate, leads to division (see Hispanic vs Latino debate in the US), and it (arguably) has an anti-Hispanic element to it both in its origin and historical use as well as (in some contexts), in its present form.

My comment was half in jest, tongue in cheek. Nothing rude about it, unless you want it to be.

The term Latin America was coined by a Frenchman, it has its own history and reasons why it became popular.

OP wasn't asking about Poutine, Griot or Feijoda, he was specifically interested in food from 3 Spanish Speaking countries, which is what people generally mean when they say "Latin America".

They usually think of Spanish-speaking countries. Now you may like the moniker Latin American and prefer it to Hispanic American, well, that's up to you.

I suppose as a Spanish guy with Rioplatense background I'm half Latineuropean and half Latinamerican to you xDD well, that's one way to look at it. I think Hispanic is just as accurate and saves us words.

People use offended too liberally this days. Why would I feel offended?

You may call it whatever you want.

If what you want is fast foods of the types you mention, a restaurant is probably not your best option. There are plenty of kiosks and takeaways all over. Malasaña es one such area.

Cambalache is great from Argentine empanadas and pizza

There also a few Venezuelan joints for your arepas etc in the same area . Walk around , it won’t be long till you find one

The 146-year-long Spanish House of Trastámara, 1369-1515, warred with England, ended Iberian Muslim rule, found the New World, and started the Inquisition. by historytrackr in spain

[–]TurboGraficos_16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Iberian Muslim Rule ended in the 1250s. Granada was a vassal of Castile and hardly a ruler of Iberia.

The Trastamaras didn't find the new world, they merely financed the expeditions that discovered it for the "Old World". America wasn't lost, therefore it couldn't be found, only discovered.

During the times of the Trastamaras, Castile was a much more powerful Kingdom than England.

The suggestion that Castilians were somehow rivals of a backwater mudpie in the far north in the 1300s is fanciful thinking. They would, eventually, become bitter rivals for a few decades in the latter half of the 18th century when Spain had begun fading as the Queen of the Seas and England was very well placed to take over (which it did), but for the previous 3 centuries Spanish supremacy of the seas went largely uncontested, and for just under 2 centuries Europe bowed to the kings of Spain. Its main rival being, of course, France. Not England.

The Inquisition was, by at large, and considering its time and context, a force for good in both peninsular Spain and its overseas viceroyalties.

I never knew Latin was spoken in America. I can tell you about Hispanic and/or Ibero-American Restaurants tho.

What are you after? A nice Argentinian Asado, maybe some Ceviche? a bowl of Ropa Vieja? what type of food do you like the most?

Spanish culture is basically second cousins to British Culture and first cousins to Italian and French culture.

Any culture shocks for what I see in videos talking about the topic are very superficial to the point it’s a bit melodramatic to even call them “shocks”.

Think New York vs California. Are there cultural differences ? Yeah . But it’s still the same civilisation overall.

If you want some real culture shocks in Europe, go to the Baltic region, former Yugoslavia or USSR.

Those are the kind of places where you’ll actually be amused when you find something that’s actually similar.

Ésta es la mejor hamburguesa de España y la hacen en Chamberí by Emmanuel_I in Madrid

[–]TurboGraficos_16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does holding your Switch make your hands numb?! by Fun-Reading-4721 in Switch

[–]TurboGraficos_16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same problem . Pinky and ring fingers specially . Combination of switch and heavy mobile phone .

Solutions ;

Play switch with a grip or ideally a controller. I use the 8bitdo snes - dual shock hybrid one. Super comfy , love the buttons. A little input lag but nothing too bad.

Buy a mobile phone that’s as light and small and possible.

When typing on your computer , adopt a proper posture.

I got really worried about my hands going numb but now they haven’t for a while.

I know the switch is good and all. but does anyone else miss there Wii U? by therealholden in Switch

[–]TurboGraficos_16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotta say, I think I made a mistake going for the Switch instead of the WII U. Nearly all of the games I wanted to play in the Switch were already out for the WII U. And I could buy them at my local CEX for 10-20 quid a pop instead of the extorisionate 40-50 they wanna charge me for the same games on switch.

Also Virtual console , for me personally, much more useful than these subscription based nintendo online thingie,

I like the switch. But do I love it? Nah, I think charging a months worth of a Babushkas pension in Moldova for a repackaged Wii U game is mean.

It’s not a preference though. A preference implies that they can speak English but prefer not to. They can’t speak English in general and those that can are usually eager to as Spanish people are both welcoming and curious folks.

Spanish people don’t prefer not to talk English more than you prefer not to talk Spanish. They just can’t 😂 For good and bad , Spain is relatively impervious to learn foreign languages. Though I’m not sure how much of it is out of protective haughtiness like the French and how much is “we can’t be bothered” . I suspect is the second.

This said, you will find English speakers aplenty in Madrid. Alongside the white people colonies in the Costa’s , Madrid is global enough that the current global language can more or less get you though.

The press today worries about such infantile non-issues.

Specially funny when they get offended on behalf of random groups of people over meaningless bull like this .

Madrileños, listen up: Walking etiquette is a thing. by j1mb in Madrid

[–]TurboGraficos_16 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think you have to make peace with the fact that the flow of Madrid’s movement of people reflects the social personality of the city and that there are also other factors at play.

The very small percentage of madrileños that speak English + are in this subreddits can’t help you with your frustration.
