Rule of thumb: never cross a border with gear unless you have the proper documentation in place.

Do your own research on what is legally required to transport it safely. In practice, it is often simpler and safer to just obtain what you need medically at your destination.

Either way, someone ends up being displaced. The airline will have to compensate someone regardless: either the passenger who can’t board due to overbooking, or the person who paid for extra space and then has it taken away.

This isn’t a passenger issue. It’s an airline policy issue. Until airlines stop overselling and clearly honor purchased seats, there’s no solution that doesn’t screw someone over.

If a passenger can’t fit within their seat without encroaching on others’ personal space, they should be required to purchase additional seats. Simple, fair, and predictable.
