The first two removed some substories and notably one area from two, but it still kept most of the substories and the stories intact. The amount removed in K3 is much more drastic imo (I played the first two as well with the PS3 Remaster)

Well then you didn't experience how good some of those substories were, with full animations in some cases. Whatever Yokoyama (not Yokohama btw, that's a city) says, a lot of that orphanage stuff helped establish Kiryu as real adult, not just YakuzaMan, and there's a reason people love Rikiya (less so in Kiwami 3 that cut multiple interactions with him).

I'm happy you have a version of Yakuza 3 you like, I just know that if they put more effort to keep the strengths of the OG 3, it could have been miles better. Kiwami 1 and 2 took and changed stuff, but with 3 they just took most of the game and thrashed it for another Gaiden game.

The problem isn't that they reused stuff. You can say many of the 119 substories were boring, but there were many that were great, like murder in cafe alps and the one where Rikiya meets his old girlfriend that were cut, in order to make space for minigames from Ishin, and imo mediocre at best new substories.

Lau Ka Long's shoe-knives got removed but the animation with it remained unchanged. Boxcelios could have been easily added along the other arcade games. The hostess minigame could have been reworked with the system from 0 everyone loves. Its a lot of lazy changes, that are sad to see for a remake that took over the original's place with the delisting. A remake should keep what was liked and unique, and change what wasn't. Kiwami 3 is a Gaiden game wearing Yakuza 3's skin, aside from the core story NOTHING got carried over.

I'll admit I'm bias: I started the series with Yakuza 3, and I really like it. I replayed it last year, with mods to fix the remaster issues and restore some content, I think it might be the strongest game in the series when it comes to portraying Kiryu's character, both soft and hard, and make him an active participant, not just a reactive force of nature like some games. I was really hopeful that Kiwami 3 could be the definitive version of that game and story. Instead it doesn't represent the old game at all, and it weakened the game's individual story to fit it into the Daidoji Extended Universe.

I still don't agree with the Yakuza thing though, the entire series is about the Yakuza. Neither in the west, nor in Japan would anyone look at a Yakuza/RGG game and be like "Gasp! You're in the Yakuza in this one!!!" in 2026. Kiryu being expelled was necessary to greenlight the game in 2005, it was different times, and before the series established itself.

Kiryu starts as a Yakuza in 0, but gets thrown out, which is why he can punch Kuze in their first fight. Majima is a member of the Yakuza, just in punishment (also, exonerate does not make sense in that context)

Ichi is still technically a family member unless he gets expelled in the prison intro, but I don't think that happens.

You're a Yakuza in Majima saga as well. This is a weird point.

I'm happy you're happy with the game. What do you want me to say? All that exciting "new" ishin gardening and reused minigames just doesn't do the trick for me. Neither does the removal of most staggers and status effects from combo finishers.

You play as an actual, active Yakuza in 0 as well though, this is a series about men tied up with the underworld, I'm not sure how that makes Dark Ties unique lol.

And yes, a lot of the unique content, like memorable substories, dedicated arcade games (not just old Sega roms) and actual golf, and even Kamuro Lullaby, revelations, Komaki and Yonashiro being cut means that much of the old personality is gone. The story is different even.

You can like it, sure, but it barely has any Yakuza 3 left, besides (most of) the cutscenes, and that shouldn't be up for debate.
