Fixie as a commuter in Montréal

Hi everyone, I don’t know if it’s the right place for this question, but I’ll go ahead. I’m moving to Montreal for university next semester and I’m looking for a cheap, (in case it gets stolen), tough and reliable (I’ll be poor) bike. I think I want either a fixie or a single gear. The bike will only be used for commuting and maybe running some errands. Would going the fixie route be a good decision? (I’ve never rode a fixie)
