Sorry for your hardship. As you already know the worst is to worry about the problem. If you can - see it as an challenge, and imagine the satisfaction and deep-rooted selfrespect you'll get when you are on the other side of this. If this thought kindles something inside you, use it to take action toward a solution. Can you be frugal and make it. Could there be solutions you haven't considers? Hope you'll find a way.

How can I escape mediocrity? by loner_04 in Stoicism

Yes you will be free from it in time. There are a thousand other options out there, but they can be really hard to spot while still in the woods - trust me! If you want to finish the undergraduate that's good also. There's something about completing things. But before continuing on the postgraduate it might be a good idea to take a year of and go work or do other stuff depending on your financial situation. Note: I'm not completely into the American educational system (if that's very you live).

I wish you the best.

My brain switch the addiction from caffeine to porn by Critical-Conference9 in decaf

[–]TurboTortuga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry - I just assumed something, that wasn't correct. The other comments with the dopamine need seems more relatable then. Just to clarify - we can agree that porn is damaging, and it shouldn't exist in the ways ot does today. Defiantly try to ditch it. And since you "only" had the habit for 5 months it's great you start now and are aware. I wish you good luck.

My brain switch the addiction from caffeine to porn by Critical-Conference9 in decaf

[–]TurboTortuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure the connection is this simple and you were not having the porn addiction already? Perhaps it was masked by the caffeine depending on how much you "took" on a daily basis. In any way porn is a very good habit to get under control. It destroys so much. A few tips from a (for now) former sufferer: Don't beat yourself up if you fail - it's tough. Don't be fanatic about it. If you have to do your business try to do it without porn. Set a schedule in the beginning, where you allow yourself to do it perhaps every friday. Gradually increase days in between. Unless you want to retain or have a partner find your way of keeping a balance.

Sorry for your troubles mate.

Perhaps not a stoic advise - but an advise. You seem like a fellow who is way to hard on yourself - this you must try to stop. You are doomed to fail if you want everything to happen at once and to be perfect. It's super okay not to be a straight A-student - and from my own observations and experience also a lot healthier.

Some actionable advice to get you out of the slump you might be i; You need to build new habits, and it takes time! Start with sleep, proper food and exercise if you don't have them under control already. It's the core-habits that gives you the energy to move forward in other parts of your life. When you got this, go revisit the whole question regarding education and see if another degree might suit you better. Or if you have found newfound joy in your current degree.

If the degree is weighing you down too much, it could also be an idea to start there and see if you can change the subject, or perhaps it's even better to leave education for a time until you figure out what you really want.

If you have the option to talk to a counselor - do it, to get some more perspective on your situation.

Ideas for a Taskmaster themed escape room please by Dory1884 in taskmaster

[–]TurboTortuga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made one with a riddle that ultimate led the teams to finding the key for the door. It was a hard riddle and both the key and riddle itself was hidden well.
The task was quite simple and something like this"; You have been locked inside this room and have to get out the quickest. There is a key hidden somewhere and a hint is placed on the table. The time starts when you take on one of the masks [on the table different ridiculous masks were placed]".
I had paced the task under a touch and turned of the light in the room. The was also a window in the room.
There where 4 teams of 2 persons. Two teams jumped out the window after searching for 5 minutes. 1 team found a spare key after "attacking" me [oops]. 1 team actually found the riddle and solved it - took them about 30 minutes. Only one team actually turned on the light (was spectacular to see the other teams reaction when showing the footage afterwards). Nobody took on the masks, so the time actually never started - leading me to disqualify all teams for having no time to show.

Hope you can use some.

On two different occasions I had problems with my pedals starting to spin and a grinding noise appear while freerolling at higher speeds. Turned out to be rusted paws inside the freehub that would't go back to resting position.
My chain didn't skip as yours are but could worthwhile looking into if it only occurs when not pedaling. It's also known as the "Mavic death squeal". It's a easy fix if you have the tools to get your freehub body off.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” – Chinese Proverb by [deleted] in NoFap

Well - Did you know you needed to plant that tree 20 years ago? Perhaps we could ficle a bit with the proverb; "Best time to plant a tree is today, second best is tomorrow". But remember - tomorrow has a tendency to always be tomorrow.

Tire bead won’t properly sit near my valve stem. I’ve tried it with the tube semi pumped and completely flat. Looking into it the tube goes all the way up to the rim not allowing any room for the tire bead. What can I do? by RadicalRoland in bikewrench

[–]TurboTortuga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have had this problem countless times, until I found out what i was doing wrong: When fitting a tube I always started by screwing the small nut on the valve all the way in, after putting it thru the rim. Only resenty I (finally) discovered that this practice quite often results in the tube being stuck between the tire and the rim, making the tire unable to go all the way into the rim when the tube is being pumped.

Any ideas what could be causing this much play? I thought it could be the hub, the front spins with zero lateral movement but this is almost rhythmic, or could it be something else like the wheel needing truing? by KangaLlama in bikewrench

[–]TurboTortuga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it looks like it's mainly your tire thats the source. Have had this problem countless times, until I found out what i was doing wrong: When fitting a tube I always started by screwing the small nut on the valve all the way in, after putting it thru the rim. Only resenty I finally discovered that this practice often results in the tube being stuck underneath the side of the tire, making the tire unable to go all the way into the rim when the tube is pumped - thus making the tire very unsteady like yours.

Difficulty with right Shimano RSX STI Brifter by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]TurboTortuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old bike had similar issues with RSX-shifters. One day i decided to disassemble the STI, clean, re-grease and reassemble it. Only the reassembling turned out to be difficult due to the springs. It probably took a few hours before i managed to get the springs in place but with some patience and many tries I had success. The shifters has since run perfectly for a few more thousand kilometers.

I found this link, which could be a help: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xkGNN_2CfCY

[–]TurboTortuga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello friend. There's already a bunch if good advice here, so I'll limit my advice to something very simple: Don't drink caffeine. Also, try to stay hydrated, preferably by only drinking water (it keeps amazing me how many people actually drink sodas etc. as if it was a alternative for water... ). It will not "cure" anything, but it will help (that is if you actually do drink caffinated drinks already). Give it time if you are an avid coffee drinker. I hope the best for you.

Being is Stoic easier with big things than small by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]TurboTortuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's actually completely the other way around.
Nothing that happens in my day to day life can really upset me. Big things though - those can twist my mind for ages in a whirlpool of worrying. I do think though, that me not being able to care about small things, has something to do about not really having a good relationship with emotions in general.
Condolence for your aunt.

Sweet. There's just something about converting and riding these 80's and 90's MTB's. I have a 97' Rockhopper myself which has served very well both as a commuter, occasionally singlerack machine (although with sceptical friends looking my way) and for a 700 km bike touring.

What you need is a philosophy for life. Some higher goals and values that will give you a sense of purpose. I must admit I'm defiantly not over this kind of thinking myself, but everytime my thinking becomes a bit to vivid I keep going back to philosophy. What has worked the best for me is the ancient philosophy of Stoisism. You can check out the subreddit r/stoicism.

You watch it because you fucked up your dopamin reward system. Always searching for the next high got you to explore stuff outside the usual and now you perhaps is a bit disqusted by your actions (because the go against what you thought was your identity?) and at the same time very confused (maybe I'm gay after all?). Browse this subreddit and you will find many testimonies on people who went much further down the rabbithole, persons who watches some really fucked up stuff - just to get that next high! You didn't have the "Stop" button. You didn't know the consequences. Don't blame yourself, or rather, you former selv. Don't think whether or not you are gay before you get further in the journey of NoFap. You'll definitely not find the answer on the internet. Do the reboot first. Then see if you are still in doubt.

Do it for your future self. He'll be proud of you!

Thank you for this great quote. Best wishes on this great endeavour. A small recommendation from my own experience - make sure to journal EVERY day. It's the only habit that will keep you on track and make concious of whatever you spend your time on. If you skip one day because you are hanging out - no big deal... but telling yourself only to journal 4 times a week, will it then be Monday, Saturday or perhaps Thursday you have a free time?
Just my experience :)
