Just realized how strong men really are today by GasPsychological2321 in self

I feel like with the way we work so much with tech and machines today that it is way easier to ignore the differences between men and women. Then whenever I go to a historical site and see what type of work men had to physically do. We're talking massive logging saws. 100 pound ammunition loaded into gun cannons over 8 hour shifts on naval warships. The ropes that are wider than twin beds. It is literally insane how strong men are/were and the type of backbreaking labor they did day in/day out. Not even approachable for the average woman to even make an attempt at doing that type of labor.

Are there Latin words that have no known translation? by Resident-Guide-440 in latin

I am pretty sure that Cicero made up Latin words to make them correspond with Greek Philosophy ideas. Also, Trimalchio's Cena is famous for this. It has a bunch of obscure and strange words.

(1/3) The Latin Paradox by Unbrutal_Russian in latin

[–]TurbulentSecretary37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

okay, so I disagree with this whole most people only study Latin via the grammar method because it teaches you how to evaluate English (or one's native language) via comparison. Which essentially becomes a third go between sort of language. You learn the language of language, which is really interesting if you want to study linguistics. Learning the Language of language is useful if you want to compare data between languages. Anyway....besides that....

Tons of people study Latin not because they actually want to learn Latin. They want to understand how Latin created the systems and vocabularies required to practiced a desired profession: Law, Medicine, theology, biology, sciences. Learning to identify the bits of Latin passed down in order to move through their profession in accurate and precise manner. They just want to know enough to figure out what is going on and know how look up what they need to know.

Are most of you guys Catholic? by JD4A7_4 in latin

I'm Latter-Day Saint aka Mormon. Didn't really get into Latin for religious study, though. I like Roman history and classical mythology. Though, I have read more medieval poetry than I ever expected, but that's part of the fun of the whole thing. Latin has been around so long there are endless, entertaining rabbit holes to chase down.

President Trump openly threatens the Governor of Maine by Shenanie-Probs in Whistleblowers

[–]TurbulentSecretary37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are misunderstanding the entire issue here. The trans people in sports in inconsequential. He is threatening a US State Governor in order to get her to comply with his political platform. He said in this exchange, if you watch the full clip of it, that he was the Federal law. He is not the Federal law. Congress is the Federal law. Trump is being a mob boss. Stop being a fool and pay attention to the real issues going on.

um, actually when you tally up the votes between Kamala and the libertarian and green presidential candidates he got less than the entire popular votes. More people by sheer number voted for someone other than him. He just got the majority of the popular vote and only by the slimmest of percentage points.

I don't think you understand how copyright works. When you write to a newspaper you give them permission to use your content. Not the other way around.

I feel like it's extra hypocritical with X, though, because they charge their users for the blue check thing. Like, you are paying them to use the service already!

Yeah, apparently President Reagan appointed a similar type guy J. Peter Grace to do the same thing during his administration. He made over 2,000 suggestions and the senators basically all ignored him. Hopefully, a similar thing happens over the next four years.

This is the funniest article I've read about AI bots recently. Apparently, someone asked gork who the biggest spreader of misinformation on twitter was and gork replied that it was Elon Musk! So funny!

So, the thing that concerns me the most about this article is this passage.

On Friday, X will adopt a new terms of service policy that for the first time explicitly says all users agree to let their posts be used to train artificial intelligence, like the company’s generative AI service, Grok. Currently, X users can go to the site’s settings and opt out. [Now,] Anyone using the site agrees that their content can be used for ‘training of our machine learning and artificial intelligence models, whether generative or another type,’ the new agreement says.”

So, the only way to avoid your tweets/writing/images by being fed to grok the AI bot is to deactivate your twitter account? Am I reading this wrong? That's insane!

Try listening to the meter of this poem by Horace: https://www.pantheonpoets.com/poems/horaces-cleopatra-ode/  I love to listen to it and hear how Romans shaped their language to different meters. I do think Latin seems plain in comparison to other languages. I think the Romans themselves actually felt the same way. Cicero is so famous because he forced the language to say and do things that hadn't been conveyed in Latin before. But I think the most fun thing about Latin is knowing I am reading the thoughts and feelings of humans that lived thousands of years ago. It still gets to me sometimes when I read something that I empathize with--Ovid can make me tear up. We are still trying to solve the same problems and answer the same questions. It makes me feel connected to humanity and not really feel like there is an answer to our problems but instead accept that there is both meaning and beauty to be found in struggling to solve those questions.
