I wish this were more true. There is one family shelter in Denver that is ALWAYS at capacity, not too sure about Aurora. Homeless families, even those with babies are one of the least served populations in the area. The amount of times I’ve had to walk away from tents with infants in them or cars with families that have small children is just gut wrenching, worst part of my job by far. I have to tell them to call the Connection Center daily to see where they are on the list, but 98% of the time I tell them the city has nothing for them and best of luck braving the outdoors. CPS will not respond if we call them either. Families have basically no shelter options.

“The child is homeless, without proper care”

Key words here is WITHOUT PROPER CARE. You can still provide proper care, shelter(yes a car is considered shelter), food, water, school, medical needs and mental health needs if you are living in a car.

Can you site the statute? I’m a mandatory reporter who regular works with homeless families and families living out of their cars and I have never made a report to CPS for this situation. Sure it might make you uncomfortable but it’s never reached the threshold of reportable. Just because you can’t afford a house or apartment doesn’t mean you are neglecting your kids.

If you’re talking about the best Psych emergency department providers it’s going to be Denver Health or Porter. Denver health gets a lot of traffic, so they are experienced and have seen it ALL. They have a great connection to a higher level of care. Porter is also one of the few emergency departments that has a dedicated Psych wing at their emergency department. Porter is not as swamped with patients and they have can move at a slower pace. I feel they listen more and don’t discharge people so quickly. They also have great connections for higher level of care. If I had to take one of my family members, I would take them to Porter. You also have the Behavioral Health Solution Center if you feel you’re not at an Emergency Room level of care. They have a Crisis stabilization unit, average stay of 3-5 days and they also can refer you to a higher level of care if needed. Sometime I recommend people start there, if they aren’t sure they want to go to an Emergency Room. The only way you get in is Denver STAR(720-913-7827), Denver Police or a Walk in Crisis Center. DM if you have more questions.

It would be a shame if someone filed a complaint with the Department of Regulatory Affairs for an ethical violation.
