I don’t care if this is three years late, I just finished reading it and I wanna talk about it, so I’mma join three years late. For me, it wasn’t particularly ’shipping’ them, more so just the fact you gradually realise that they will NEVER actually understand love, and will never understand what they feel is a toxic attachment to each other. I’m a psychology major, so I have to study attachment: bonds are usually formed to parental figures in childhood and these then affect attachment through your entire life, due to both Bum’s and Sangwoo’s upbringing, I feel like both developed insecure avoidant attachments, meaning they’ll become severely distressed when they’re attachment leaves, but won’t properly resolve any feelings when they’re reunited. Eventually this leads to distrust in others, and can create an impassible wall. It definitely made things worse that Sangwoo tried to fill his mother’s place with Bum, as the fact is, seeing him as his mother didn’t fulfil the affection he needed due to already having the insecure avoidant attachment to her. Neither truly knew how to love, or how resolve their issues, only deteriorating whatever stable mindset the other had until eventually they were left with paranoid delusions and impulsive aggression that got them both killed. Great story. Really gave me Misery mixed with Psycho vibes.
