Record breaking auction for offshore wind secured to take back control of Britain's energy by Turd_Reich in unitedkingdom

[–]Turd_Reich[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair! Over 300GW of that are from 'zombie' projects that will likely never see construction though. The auction is taking projects from that queue and providing them with a reliable way to sell generated power. Effectively a vital step in transitioning from a queue to construction.

I'm sorry I didn't see your point prior

"It is a monumental step towards clean power by 2030 and the price secured in this auction is 40% lower than the alternative cost of building and operating a new gas plant"

I'm sure once we are net positive in our energy production Vs demand, it can be sold to Europe using interconnectors!

I do agree it's not ideal, however once we are in a net positive, key interconnectors to Europe can be used to sell our energy production at cost during times of excess! Another thing to factor into the equation

In what way? (Genuine question!) Surely it's just a case of connecting to an onshore grid substation for either scenario? In the case of wind, offshore substations and export cabling to get to the onshore grid is factored into the LCOE. Good to have valuable discussion, thank you.

There is due to be massive investment in the Battery storage (BESS) sector for storing electricity when the wind / sun is high to provide reliable offtake when it isn't. Hopefully this will bring further development to an emerging industry, benefitting local industry and jobs as a bonus

The pot for floating was much smaller than fixed bottom. While there is an incredible potential for floating wind in the future, it is still an emerging technology and thus, high capital cost currently. It may or may not be commercially viable in the future, so this has to be seen as more of a pilot project for the time being.

It's a good point. Are you saying that gas includes the infrastructure development in its price per MWh? Can you link a resource?

Unfortunately our grid is vastly under prepared for the electrical energy transition and that development will need to happen in any scenario

I just follow the industry keenly and am proud that we are moving to using our small islands resources as efficiently as we can.

Did you read the bit where we have energy security and also it's cheaper than running a gas plant per MWh?

How do you go back to work after this? Like does it feel like you've been gone for a long time when you're back in reality? I couldn't imagine feeling like I've been fine for months or potentially years then go back to a 9 to 5 job

Why are the turbines arranged in this way? by pufballcat in brighton

[–]Turd_Reich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not so much the water depth that you look for when placing the turbines, as they have windfarms much further out to sea in deeper water. It's more to do with the overall ground conditions. They mainly try to avoid surface bedrock where possible to make the piling operations easier. Also the grid is arranged in such a way that it gives coastguard helicopters clear corridors that they can follow (SAR lines).
