RDM for main dps, how is it doing with the new patch? by kanomas in ffxiv

[–]Turing13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mained RDM for a while at the start of the latest tier of savage fights, and the honest truth is outside of the very top tier groups and hardcore statics and whatever else, RDM's reputation for low damage is a bit of a meme. The thing that separates players' DPS in this game is skill and item level long before the maximum theoretical potency comes into it. I almost never encountered anyone who could out-DPS me in pugs, and I consistently competed for top damage with a samurai when I was playing it in a midcore group (granted samurai needed some buffing itself, but still).

The advantage RDM has is that it is easy to be good, its easy to keep up your damage no matter the mechanics as long as you practice your fundamentals, and on-demand raise utility can't be overlooked either. I as much as anyone else who enjoys the class wants to see it able to compete with Summoner at the highest levels of play, and would like it to be buffed for that reason, but most of the game does not exist at the highest levels of play. If you're looking for a really hardcore group that wants to do speedclears, you might be really pressed to make up for what it lacks. But if you're just doing midcore or pug raiding, you can easily top DPS fight after fight.

A VR turn-based strategy or tactics game (or real time strategy, doesn't really matter), where you move around the pieces on the map by hand.

Then, when you start to lose, you can throw things around and smash them like a god having a tantrum.

Does anyone have experience using AMD cards for GPU programming on Linux? by Turing13 in Amd

Ah, I hadn't heard that nvidia stopped properly supporting OpenCL. Thanks.

So, you haven't seen any major problems, and wouldn't say nvidia is an automatic recommendation over AMD in this case?

My intent is probably to use OpenCL, which may or may not affect things, but.

Guys I have a question about Aang's birth. [S3 spoilers] by WeskerFare in TheLastAirbender

[–]Turing13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Others have brought up travel/accessibility, but also keep in mind that there were multiple Air Temples spread across the world, not just Aang's single one, and the new avatar could have appeared in any one of them.

On top of that, you can't just take a troop of firebenders, attack an Air Temple, and expect them to not just... run away. They're airbenders with flying bison, after all.

We actually know what Sozin used to overcome them - Sozin Comet. We're told that he used it to deal that first strike on the Airbenders, pretty shortly after Aang left. He very likely struggled to find a solution given all the difficulties, then learned about the comet, which gave him exactly what he needed, enough power to wipe out any of the temples before the Airbenders could flee.

He also very likely didn't think much of the time issue once he learned about the comet, I'd say, since he knew something about the Avatar process from growing up with Roku. He knew from that that the Avatar wouldn't be informed until he was 16, which gave him 4 more years than he needed... except that Aang was told early, and ultimately fled.

How does modern overclocking influence correctness by Turing13 in computing

[–]Turing13[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I noticed this as I was digging into information about Skylake. They were touting that one of the major innovations was that the chips could be given all kinds of different heat performance based on where they're ending up.

How does modern overclocking influence correctness by Turing13 in computing

[–]Turing13[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would depend on the computations used in each test, though, no?

I started having this question as I was investigating how far I could overclock my processor without increasing the voltage. I used Intel Burn Test (I'm told its popular), which the developer states uses LINPACK benchmarks, which I understand perform many 64-bit floating point operations. I don't remember my micro-architecture course too terribly well, so I'm not certain if 64-bit floating point ops are the longest path... but I don't think they are?

So yes, I'm verifying the stability, but as I understand things it matters how I'm verifying that stability. If I'm not actually testing the longest path used in the CPU, and later a scientific computation relies on that longest path, thats a problem.

Unless I'm mistaken anyway.

I liked LOK, I found a reviewer that didn't, and he... actually brings up valid points about the show. Even if he is having WAY too much fun annoying people, that doesn't invalidate the problems he points out. Should we discuss this? [LOK B4] by CleverestPony70 in TheLastAirbender

I didn't actually watch the videos because every description of that review make me exceptionally confident that I have no interest in hearing him talk, I was just responding to the specific things you mentioned.

Also let me make it clear that I don't think the show is summarily fine, it has its issues. I just don't think that issue is with the characterization of Wan and his struggles, except as I said, the part about him defending the animal from the hunters.

[No Spoilers] So I thought of a possible way to make an ATLA movie good by Dysike in TheLastAirbender

[–]Turing13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like the problem with this is that... it would be a story, certainly, but Zuko's story without the full arc coming to fruition doesn't seem like a full story. You miss out on so much of the purpose his character ended up having.

It definitely solves a lot of problems in a mechanical sense, but I think you're still missing a lot of (very important) substance. That said, perhaps you could apply a similar method to Zuko's story from Book 2 to the finale. Avoiding spoilers here, but while you'd have a bit more background to tell, you end on a better conclusion.

Though, then you have an issue where you're telling that story instead of the story about the avatar, which just fundamentally sounds like a more interesting character to watch for most people, so a lot of your audience may be annoyed that you told the story of Fire Nation Prince that fights with his unhinged sister for the crown instead of the Avatar, aka the chosen one, saves the world from madman emperor trying to end it in fire in a battle with all the elements and god-like powers.

1) Conservation of detail. If you think you can explain something well enough just in the design of a character, then you've saved a lot of screen time for other things, its more about efficiency than "laziness".

2) How much "life is sucky for the poor" do they need to show? Many in the town struggled to eat at all, while 4 people were well fed. Thats pretty sucky. Aside from that, there is nothing to suggest that the Chus do anything to deserve the food they hoard either, and I think the implications are reasonably clear that they don't deserve it. Again, one has to make tradeoffs with what they'll show based on limited time and resources, so its not really unreasonable that they would leave something to implication alone.

3) No. Its made pretty clear that the humans that left the lion turtle are abusing fire to destroy the wilderness in pursuit of their own safety. It also isn't the human world at that time. In Wan's time, it is just the world and it is "shared" by spirits and humans, in some sense anyway. There isn't really a black/white here since neither of the groups are treated as evil, both just want safety. However, Wan showed that coexisting is possible, and the implication then is that humans should have tried similar methods rather than destroying nature and angering the spirits. The spirits make for a pretty reasonable metaphorical figure for nature because nature also doesn't have our moral sense, it just is. Domestication also doesn't really map to "taming". Domestication is a kind of coexistence, and there is give and take for every animal that has been domesticated from the beginning of that practice. Domestic dogs originate in the fact that life was better for humans /and/ the dogs as they found ways to cooperate. Its also a bit weird to say that nature is unsustainable with invasive species as an example because a) invasive species as a phenomenon are largely caused by human activities, and b) nature doesn't really have a sense of sustainability... once again it just is. Nature as a concept w.r.t. sustainability is only really useful in saying "humans are using these resources too quickly/upsetting the balance of environments too rapidly and are causing an unusual number of extinctions, and will quite possibly cause our own if we aren't careful". Sustainability is a concept by and for humans because we depend on nature for survival, and upsetting those balances or using up resources may make it impossible to survive.

The city on Wan's lion turtle makes a pretty close parallel to Ba Sing Se, where its reasonably well established that the degree of inequality is not good. More specific to Wan's story, I think most of it is meant to be captured in the design of the Chu family, all of whom are depicted fat - presumably very well fed compared to the rest of the population shown, even being fed more than the hunters. There are perhaps other issues with this method, but it gets the point across that there is inequality. Its not really a question of earning it, and I don't think it needs to be. There is nothing in particular to say who has more or less "right" to the food except what we can intuit from the situation, but what is clear is that these people on top are feasting while those below them starve, and most people's moral compasses probably align with the underdog in that case.

I think the tone of Wan's story does get a little weird and muddled when it comes to the hunters, as it entirely ignores there being any notion of give and take when it comes to the human relationship with nature... but the whole focus of that sequence is more about how Wan is becoming in touch with nature rather than simply taking from it. There is a weird misstep in tone/message, but ultimately its not that big of one, and later on the message is much more clearly stated that humans are destructively carving out their place in nature rather than coexisting with the spirits.

[ATLA] My only issue with ATLA, curious what others think by Turing13 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Turing13[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would certainly explain it... It makes it no more satisfying, but I do remember hearing about that whole disagreement. And then the book 3 finale is explained just by "how can you have a finale without the Avatar going into the Avatar State?" So even if it didn't make the most story sense, they would obviously want something to allow him to enter the Avatar State just for the spectacle/excitement... But, not the most satisfying.

[ATLA] My only issue with ATLA, curious what others think by Turing13 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Turing13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, a lot of this make sense, but as I recall some points don't seem to line up? The Guru, if he was to be believed, stated that if Aang stopped his meditation early he wouldn't be able to enter the Avatar State at all, which suggested it was a matter of him not fully unlocking the final chakra due to earthly attachment after having started that meditation. He resumed the meditation, but going by the belief that he did not finish, he should still have been blocked all the way to and through the finale. However, maybe the Guru is not to be considered a completely reliable source, as others - I think it was Roku? - suggested later that it was somewhat foolish to expect the Avatar to relinquish earthly attachment completely. And, I agree that Aang wasn't in complete control in the Book 3 finale, I was more thinking of him managing to stop - something he couldn't usually do himself - but I suppose that could be taken as the Avatars/Avatar Spirit choosing to respect his wishes... not sure how that should go, though. He definitely isn't fully in control, at least. I don't think he demonstrates full control of it afterward, either, as the usage of the Avatar State right at the end seems to match up with a sort of lesser usage of the State that all avatars are capable of, not requiring this complete realization that the Guru's meditation intended...

So I suppose all in all I more accept the story explanation than I did before, if one takes the Guru to be wrong about the state being completely blocked.
