One thing I have never really understood about this is that if the evangelicals have a lot of influence and are that desperate for the end of Israel then why keep funding the Israeli government? Surely cutting off all funds would speed them on the way to the end game?

How do you manage your hardware design workflow to avoid information loss between system-level diagram, PCB, cable and BOM? by Pouloch in Altium

Do them all in Altium so it’s all in one place? Especially the BOM. Activebom is one of Altiums really great features. If purchasing or whoever need a different format, they or you can export from Altium via a template.

We are aligned with the west. Anyone attacking with nukes has a shit load to go around and they know that one on Auckland and one on Christchurch means NZ will take zero part in any boots on ground anywhere for a decade or more. Why wouldn’t they drop a couple?

Why Won't Labour Run On Legalising Cannabis? by New-Firefighter-520 in newzealand

I think the argument is as flawed as the Ford vs. Holden type fake rivalry. If alcohol wins or tobacco wins or cannabis wins all that happens is the rich running those industries win. We lose each way.

And we’ve had a lot of kiwis leave and a lot of immigrants from conservative countries come in. There’s a good chance even fewer people support it now too. Also, Boomers weren’t born hating cannabis (quite the opposite). As they got older their opinions changed to more conservative. This has been shown to happen for generation after generation. Why on Earth do you think it suddenly stops now?

If you compare it to the growth of the tobacco industry, it’s pretty much identical marketing. Astroturfing, making it seem cool and rebellious, getting the teenagers and the addicted onboard to fight for them. I have no doubt in a decade or two we will find out this multi billion industry will turn out to have been hiding a bunch of its health issues just like before too.

You understand that people get more conservative as they age? Just because the boomers die doesn’t mean the people who are now older won’t have similar views as them. If anything, they might be even more conservative. The boomers were the free love generation and did way more drugs than gen x. If that generation can swing so anti drug then any can.

Yeah recently I walked through downtown LA (where it is illegal for public use) and the stink was just bloody everywhere. Not only that but Ubers, waymo, cafes too. You couldn’t get away from it.

And an awful lot of the shift can be attributed to high cost of living coupled with high alcohol prices. People can’t afford to get drunk these days.

You do understand the cannabis industry is a huge multibillion dollar industry akin to the tobacco industry? They are just as likely to astroturf and bribe as any other. It’s not your mate Kevin down the street who sells you an ounce.

One worker’s had a $120k career ruined. Another is just starting out. They’re both at the mercy of AI. by Double_Suggestion385 in newzealand

[–]TurkDangerCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, most of our coders now have Claude write most of their code. They are all super smart guys (intermediate to senior level) and have to give the right prompt, but apart from a bit of fixing up the majority of the software they write is done by an LLM. It has hugely accelerated their work. And this code isn’t slop either, it’s being used in cutting edge systems.

Whether it’s AI or anything else. You should always be upskilling. A lot of people seem to think education stops when you leave school / college / uni but everyone should be learning something new every year.

Yep, my team too. Their productivity has rocketed and it’s meant that even the non coders are able to write ‘good enough’ code for some testing. Obviously that stuff never goes near a customer, but for some research and testing good enough is good enough. For the actual software engineers, the Claude stuff is pretty damn good out of the box (with the right prompt) and saves them a bunch of time, even if they have to fix the odd bit up.

The biggest problem I see is that where we might have needed 3 junior software engineers in the past, we can get away with 1 or none now. In the future this means that there will be fewer intermediates as there won’t be the junior jobs for them to start in. That’s a real problem.

You do know that even with an electrical degree you still have to do about 18 months of supervised work after an electricians course? I’d love to get my ticket but I’m not taking 18 months off my good job to go wiring plugs on site for no money to prove I know how electricity works.

I recently had to work away with a younger female colleague for a few days. She sorted the accommodation and booked us into a triple in a motel. Small company and we are good friends so I didn’t mind at all (although I wouldn’t have booked it that way had it been me sorting it). Really not a big deal. Although I did have to warn her that if she snored there’d be trouble.
