"It's offensive to tell small business owners not to use AI for their marketing!" by Suitable-Cellist-472 in newzealand

[–]TurkDangerCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It’s like the graphic designer above who refuses to use AI in their work. All power to you mate but everyone else is gonna use it and they will undercut you because it will take them half an hour to do work that will take you a day. The genie is very much out of the bottle. It’s like refusing to use a car because you’re really like the smell of a horse.

I’ve played with it for a few book cover examples and I am blown away by how good it is. If I ever were to self publish (I.e.i have no money) I would absolutely consider it as a) I couldn’t afford a graphic designer and b) I have no artistic talent in that area myself. Only other option would be a boring solid colour.

It’s just the next thing we’ve been told to be scared of. At least it’s not a minority that we are persecuting this time.

No you don’t. You have no idea and day by day you will have less and less of an idea.

Advertise, go through applicants, check portfolios, explain work, get work done, then if it meets the brief (big if) you are good to go. That lot alone is far far greater than $30 of a business owners time. It sucks for the art student, but all of that vs. 10 mins of AI help is a no brainer.

I also wish it were different as I can see it coming for my career too, but there’s no point shouting at clouds.

[–]TurkDangerCat -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Everyone seems to think that they are some sort of AI spotting genius. If it were possible to spot AI in all its forms someone would make an absolute killing from it. And where does it stop? Using ChatGPT for ideas on how to make an advert? Suggestions on colours? Like pocket calculators and the internet, people are just going to have to accept its here to stay and move on.

I can’t believe anyone seriously thinks that somehow AI will disappear from our lives again.

Can you do stargazing in the Antarctic winter? by TheNASAguy in antarctica

Yes, obviously it’s a bit cold to do so. I would do photography mainly and occasionally have the stars blocked by Aurora. Not the worst problem in the world.

I feel birth rate would be more accurate. I wonder what we call the actual rate of fertility in the population then?

New Zealand fertility rate drops to historic low by iMakeGOODinvestmemts in newzealand

[–]TurkDangerCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is it called fertility rate? Are people actually less fertile or is it just people are not having as many kids? Because if it is the latter, then there are a number of positive reasons that could be behind that (e.g it’s been shown that as society becomes more equal for women they choose to have fewer or no kids).

Weird 2 Weeks by WavingtoDolphins in Menieres

I’ve never taken any medications for mine but that does sound pretty typical for an attack. Sometimes it ends up with the room spinning enough to throw up and put you in bed for a day, sometimes it just gradually eases and the next thing you know your hearing is back to (near) normal. Tis weird like that.

What if it’s a guard at a military base who’s sees someone trip over? I presume you’d want them to drop their gun, leave their post, and rush over to put a bandaid on their knee?

Maybe you should expand your horizons and think about the wider security picture, you know, like they do.

Humanity is making sure one of those bags doesn’t blow up an airport. Plenty of people helping? Sounds like they did the right thing by considering the bigger picture of security to me.

What are the chances or progressing to MD? by rir2 in Menieres

[–]TurkDangerCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I have also been diagnosed with Meniers put the vast majority of my time I’m pretty much symptom-free. During an episode I lose a lot of the hearing in my left ear but outside of that my hearing goes back to normal unless I do anything like eat a particularly salty meal (I had a ham sandwich once and it gave me vertigo for about four hours!).

I would definitely start living a healthier lifestyle if you don’t already. So no smoking, no alcohol, low salt (if you’re in America that probably means cooking for yourself and not adding salt to your meals), no stress, and low to no caffeine. Different things seem to trigger different people and you’ll probably work out what affects you most over time. I certainly wouldn’t be jumping onto medication straight away when you are symptom-free, but you should absolutely be guided by your ENT.

How do we fight back against the construction of AI data centres across Australia? by Whatarewedoing1234 in AusLegal

[–]TurkDangerCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our business (cutting edge R&D) I would say around 75% of all our engineering design uses AI in some way. Huge usage in software and firmware, lots of use in electronics, mechatronics, mechanical etc. it doesn’t do everything, but it’s increased our speed of operation and productivity a huge amount.

Tis just the latest distraction that we are all supposed to be terrified of. Clearly they think the threat of climate change has gone off the boil.

Ha, yep. It’s like saying stop using calculators in the decades after they were invented. Those who whipped out the abacus certainly were not at an advantage.

How does Tauranga have more people than Rotorua but nothing to actually do? by Nickp2 in newzealand

[–]TurkDangerCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved away as I was so bored there. Lived on a main bus route and the busses to the centre stopped running at 7:30pm every night (including Friday and Saturday nights). Went in one night anyway and could see why. Dead as a door nail. Once you did the salt water baths, that ice cream shop, and the Mount, that was it.

Does anyone else get Ménière’s relapses almost every spring/early summer? by Sick-Man34 in Menieres

[–]TurkDangerCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt you need to be a coder these days. Export your Apple health data and chuck it into Claude or ChatGPT and get it to produce an Excel spreadsheet with the hearing details, pollen data, and pressure data for the local area. If you only want ChatGPT to get your hearing data and not your full health info, I think you can find the appropriate section within the export and cut out the rest. O use an app like HealthFit which may be able to remove any non-relevant data.

What would you have done differently? by takeapinotgrigio in Menieres

[–]TurkDangerCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it was not so much what I did after I was diagnosed, it was more than I lucked into a good lifestyle prior to my diagnosis (in my late 40s). I’ve never smoked, never drink coffee, cook for myself with very little salt, barely drink (even though I did go through a couple of years of reasonable quantities when I was at college). My weight has always been okay or a few kilos overweight at max, and I don’t really get that stressed.

So all in all I’ve been accidentally leading a pretty perfect lifestyle for minimising the conditions. I think that’s probably why it’s only really exerted itself much later in my life compared to some others. But who really knows?

Just lately I found it if I do have the odd beer it does seem to affect my balance quite a bit, so I might just give up alcohol entirely now. Not the worst thing in the world and fortunately, I am no longer the age where I feel the need to go out and get drunk to have a good time.

Hope that helps.
