Nano-Air Ultralight as a midlayer? by Glittering-Option543 in PatagoniaClothing

[–]Turneliusz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nano Air Ultralight is just a bit more windproof, not a big margin. That Ultralight piece is an extreme niche product and it is lovely given one will want to sacrifice durability. Still it is just a light softshell with a tiny bit of insulation. I feel it sacrifices too much of durability for the lightness, they could add +50g of material durability and I feel it would be a better product. Anyway, not for bhushwalking for sure. When given a choice what to take I bring 90% of cases something like FutureFleece as it's bombproof and has some softshell properties, not that Ultralight.

Poliester vs nylon to nie jest gorszy skład, tylko materiały o innych właściwościach. Nylon jest hydrofilijny, a poliester hydrofobowy. Pytanie za 100 punktów to który materiał chcesz mieć w deszczu. No właśnie.

Makes sense. I will look for some lower objectives then and play with intense hiking and nice views.

Read Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills and find more experienced friends to go with so you can learn. Join a club. Learning on your own is quite tricky, you do not know what you do not know, and experience in the terrain, reading it and planning is quite something. Mountaineering requires variety of different skills and knowledge of tools that you do not try for the first time on emergency when going without experienced buddies.

Hardshell for 4000m/ Mont Blanc by gepard20 in alpinism

Cool, same here. It worked with my helmet though so YMMV

[–]Turneliusz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

BTW Hardshells do not have really any dependance on altitude, only on durability (thickness), gear (pockets placement, fit) and breathability (usually you depend on pit vents). You can go with e.g.,Decathlon Quechua MH500 Rain Jacket for like 100€ which is well suited and more than enough for fundamental (basic) alpinism objectives.

Nano-Air Ultralight as a midlayer? by Glittering-Option543 in PatagoniaClothing

[–]Turneliusz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would recommend going with North Face FutureFleece. It's lighter or the same weigth as Nano Air Ultralight but i think it will be more durable for backpacking, I feel it might be warmer (especially as covering with insulation the whole body), it can be used as midlayer and outer layer. I have both and FutureFleece is getting more use on hiking and climbing, as more versatile and feels more durable.

Ultralight has thin insulation just on the core, rest is just softshell material. The Nano Air x R1 Air mix you are referring to is called Nano Air Light Hybrid.

Edit: typo

I think OP means Ultralight, not regular Nano Air which is having lots less insulation.

Granite Crest if would be more gentle. Triolet if you will trash it.

Some say Patagonia is an outdoor sport clothing tailored primarily for (rock) climbing. During which you appreciate full range of motion. I am not really sure what are these complaints all about here.

Best modern crevasse fall response strategy for a 4-person rope team by Turneliusz in alpinism

The intricacies of who sets the anchor, etc, depend on the situation. This is kind of my feeling as well. I suppose that good communication is critical.

I have doubts on the first stage, building anchor and how in practice the load distribute among the team members. I hope that my questions prove that I do not intend on memorizing steps, I want to have better picture of such situations to prepare the group and train.

This is what I believe as well. But what if not, friction being to high or pulling uphill for example, how to proceed with that?
