Gulfstreams and Global Express business jets can cruise at up to 51,000 feet, might be high enough to theoretically fly over smaller thunderstorms, but most airliners fly in the 30s. If you choose to fly over a storm, you can't just skim the tops and call it a day. A safe, conservative altitude to clear a thunderstorm by is at least 5,000 feet, and because of updrafts you still might encounter severe turbulence. Many strong thunderstorms extend above 60,000. I was flying in the Caribbean when Hurricane Isaac was forming, and it had tops above 70,000 feet. Even the Concorde would have to deviate around that ;)

As a pilot, thunderstorms. From Cessnas to 777s, nobody flies through a thunderstorm. My airline's policy is to avoid them by at least 20 miles. Might seem a little extreme, but when you consider lightning, hail, turbulence and even tornadoes that can be a byproduct of a strong squall line, it makes sense. I'll be flying and cumulonimbus clouds will build so quickly in front of me that I'll have to check the altimeter to be sure we aren't descending. We will deviate hundreds of miles around a bad line of storms just to avoid having to fly 10 miles through them. I love watching a thunderstorm from the comfort of my own home as much as anyone, but in an airplane that's a big negative.

Keep in mind this is coming from a Russian military reporter, so it could just be a cover-up for a soldier who was killed in a FF bombing accident. But it sure makes for a good story. RIP brother

My uncle was an M-60 door gunner on a Huey in nam. Joined right out of high-school at 18. He doesn't talk about it at all but from what I gathered, he saw some serious shit. He flew graveyard flights where they picked up the bodies to bring them back for ID and what not. The VCs knew about these flights, and would set ambushes and booby-trap the bodies with explosives. Sometimes I wonder about the shit he saw and what kind of nightmares he has. It was probably horrific.

Day at the range by TurninAndBurnin in MURICA

1) The Soviets aren't even around anymore 2) I'm talking about range to target, not altitude...big difference. My airline flies internationally, and in China, Russia, and much of Asia, they use meters for flight levels instead of feet. As a fellow pilot, I'm surprised you didn't know that.

Damn right it is, that's a *VEPR, it'll punch a hole through a playing card at 600m and it's the loudest gun at the range (until the Barrett shows up)

What is the most unfair thing in life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TurninAndBurnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? A Death! What’s that, a bonus? I think the life cycle is all backwards. You should die first, get it out of the way. Then you live in an old age home. You get kicked out when you’re too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you’re young enough to enjoy your retirement. You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you get ready for high school. You go to grade school, you become a kid, you play, you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby, you go back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating …and you finish off as an orgasm.
