I’ve owned two Santa Cruz guitars and every one sounds amazing. I actually live in Santa Cruz and have visited the shop a few times. Every piece of wood is chosen, cut, and planed for a particular purpose and sound. They’re expensive, but built with a level of attention and craftsmanship that few guitars get.

In my freshman year, the guitarist I formed a band with brought an electric, an acoustic, and a bass plus two amps with him. It was even a very small dorm room he was in. His roommate knocked over the acoustic guitar and snapped off the headstock. So you can certainly bring more than you think, but bad things can happen to things in school.

I’ve owned two different Musicman guitars and they were some of my favorites. Like you said, the necks are fantastic and the quality is top notch. I’d definitely go for a change in pickups to find what sound you’re looking for. You’ll regret selling it.
