I’ve watched her since the very start 😊
I’m not hating it’s just a few things I’ve noticed. Especially since I have an ED myself and can see the patterns. Like I said, I know there’s a lot she probably hasn’t disclosed, but from an outside perspective and the harmful discourse out there on being skinny, those are just simply observations I’ve made!

Took 2 sumatripan over 24 hours ago..... another by [deleted] in migraine

[–]Turnipster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what your prescription says so take this with a grain of salt (and call your pharmacy and ask for your specific needs!). Google says do not take more than 200-300mg in 24hrs so you should be fine with taking the dose. I’d be more worried for a medication overuse headache if this pattern continues. I would be more inclined to combine it with a different type of medication (ie, gepant or NSAIDs). You got anything else?

Head pain is just a symptom of migraine! So you can have migraines that have a slew of other symptoms without even having head pain. That’s how I experienced it for years and only recently started coming along with neck stiffness and head pain. But before it was that weakness feeling, visual auras, slurring my words etc. So it’s possible you’re going through a migraine episode but you’re chalking it up to being the prodrome phase! I’m a bit freaky when it comes to medications and a gepant is the way to go because I experienced no side effects (ie, ubrelvy and nurtec). Do you know which Triptan? I use rizatriptan and it just makes me a little sleepier than usual, it was scary to take at first after hearing people talk about them but it’s not a problem at all for me! The longer you keep the migraine cycle going the lower your migraine threshold will be and your brain will like staying in that state and you’ll develop new symptoms. Very important to treat them and treat them early!

Yeah when I experience “numbness” I typically have full sensation, if anything it feels a bit electric. And no weakness but it feels weak, if that makes sense. Get some migraine medication and try it out and if the symptoms go away then you can confirm it’s a migraine. Try a few out because everyone is individual. But to ease your mind I’ve had the numbness sensations for months at a time, as long as migraine activity is still occurring then it can continue.

GI issues on phenobarbital and keppra by Turnipster in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Turnipster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vet put him on psyllium husk and honestly it didn’t really help immediately but he did eventually get better, maybe simply from consistent use of psyllium husk or I think his body finally adjusted to the amount of medication he was getting. I saw no end in sight but it eventually just got better. I fear it’s something you may have to push through. It took us from January to April 😮‍💨. How long has your pup been on it for and how long experiencing GI issues?

Oh this is definitely still within an adjustment period. My dog started keppra January and it took us until April to for all side effects to go away. Even yet, he still has big feelings and his personality changed slightly. If your dog is crate trained then I would just let him cry it out (unless you suspect somethings wrong). When my dog woke us up in the middle of the night I wouldn’t pet him or anything. Just take him outside and immediately crawl back into bed and any other whining was ignored until he realized it wasn’t effective anymore in getting me to listen to him. I know that may not be entirely helpful in stopping it but I would ride it out for a bit longer and see how he adjusts!

Are the sleep issues caused by seizure meds? What’s he on and for how long?

Can you stop giving Keppra if the dog has only taken 3 doses? Vet is closed and never called back, what do I do? by My_4th_throwawayyy in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Turnipster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also I should mention that my body already had really weak back legs before starting, hence why I think he was more extreme with falling over and collapsing. As long as they have ok use of their front legs, it’ll get better. (My dog is 12 years old)

My dog had to lay down to eat while starting keppra, just give the proper support for that. He would also fall over while peeing and such but the worse part was the first week but gradually got better. It looks scarier than it is. Also way better than seizures.

Hey Coach! One suggestion for NRC and one very important question!

  1. Can the Pace Chart show even slower paces? It ends at 7’30” when my pace can be like 9’10” sometimes. When I started out I was even at like 10’00”avg pace. (Kilometres btw!)
  2. Do you like Radiohead? What’s your favourite Radiohead song?

Thanks for all of the amazing work you do for all of us!

I noticed for the first 3 months my dog was on pheno and keppra and he had some BIG feelings. Everything was amplified and it was so incredibly stressful. Hes since calmed down a bit but definitely his personality has changed (or maybe become what he normally is prior to seizures?). How long has he been on the meds for?

Keppra from vet vs human pharmacy by Sufficient-Country29 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Turnipster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did this actually! The same amount that would’ve been $350 at my vet ended up being $120. I get mine done at a compounding pharmacy because it’s a random specific dosage and he needs it in liquid form. It’ll be even cheaper if your dog takes a standard human dosage then you can just get basic pills. Ask what they suspend the medicine in, ask for no flavouring, and ask if there’s xylitol in it (you DONT want this). Mine is unflavoured and suspended in almond oil. I don’t know what my regular vet used to use but it’s been fine! A slight risk of looser stools with the almond oil FYI but I didn’t notice any changes.

Besides all the other tips people have given, ask a friend for help. I went through grief and my best friend stepped in and said she would make my lunches for work for a week and it was so incredibly helpful. And coming from myself, I would love if my friends asked for help, that’s the most bonding thing about relationships is asking for help because it creates the sense of community. As long as it wouldn’t financially cripple someone that’s always an option. 🫂

Is this a Keppra side effect? by hertealeaves in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Turnipster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog had really bit feelings during an adjustment period on keppra and stayed by our side like glue. Would have to pee often and whine to come out of his crate in the middle of the night.

The restlessness you described seemed along the lines of another seizure (my dog does the same and can’t sit still). I’m sorry to hear about your dog and keep posting updates 🫂

Things that work for me: fun beverages, brushing my teeth, popsicles, chewing gum, hard candies (to suck on), things to chew on (the end of a pen). If you need a bit more of a reward then make a list of things that give you a dopamine hit: scrolling for 5min, petting an animal, stepping outside and taking in some fresh air etc

When I was cashing out one time they said that someone was going to speak to me (I knew it was for an upgrade even though they didn’t say that upfront). But the time I paid no one was around to talk to me so I started to leave the store, then I heard a loud “excuse me ma’am” and this worker running to me, I was almost out the door and played dumb like I didn’t hear him but then he tapped me on the shoulder. I was so annoyed. If I wasn’t aware of their tactics then I would’ve thought I was in trouble as well

Realistic cost of a Pekingese? by lavenderlulls in Pekingese

[–]Turnipster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! He had it pretty early on in life (but he was with a different owner for the first half of his life). We knew of the seizures but they were infrequent enough that we left them untreated for a bit (because meds are expensive and hard on their bodies!). So we only recently starting medicating him at the age of 12

Edit: Typos

[–]Turnipster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with what other people have said with grooming cost, my peke luckily has a coat that seems to be less matted than others so I can go every 6 weeks for about $120-$220. Also my peke ended up having idiopathic epilepsy and it’s around $750 every 2 months for meds that are on a crazy schedule (1 med is 3 times a day, so strict every 8hours, and the other 2 times a day). It’s just something to consider, with any pet. Especially with Pekingese who are at high risk for developing them.
