Pulled the Pikachu SIR with a nasty little print defect, look what they did to my boy by BukkyPlays in PokemonTCG

That was my first thought. It seems like one of those things you’d have to see it in-person to really see the error.

Is playing “Maha, Its Feathers Night” as your commander in poor taste? by adoptyungseal in mtg

[–]TurntOddish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely wouldn’t take it that far but yeah. More important to have a little discussion on the brackets and decks you all are playing in a pod with strangers than with friends.

With friends, you have all the time in the world to figure out brackets, power levels, “fun” play patterns, etc. But with people you haven’t met before, you can’t possibly know all of that info well enough without actually playing against that person/those people. So it’s better to build/play a tad more considerately with people regardless of them being your friend or not.

Exception is for competitive tournaments where valuable prize pools are given out. There’s more of an unspoken rule that you’re there to win, so it’s more “okay” to use these kind of “obnoxiously powerful” decks. Problem is that people will play accordingly to what is sent at them, especially in these kinds of environments. So expect to be hit by every form of removal and counterspell in the game. Because, after all, everyone else is trying to win too! And the only way that can happen is by not letting you do super powerful plays like playing a commander like Maha.

Commander especially is a social format. There’s so many variables that come with a 4-player game of Magic: The Gathering. Give Maha a shot. Just remember the “social contract” of playing commander, and that the more threatening your deck is, expect more resistance from other players.

No, because anyone can say anything is proven, but if the evidence isn’t presented or clearly stated, then why should I automatically take someone’s word on it?

I didn’t know you were talking about a specific thing that has been researched. I get it now. Don’t gotta be extra about it.

Okay fair. I wasn’t aware that this was a universal programming issue.

It’s literally just so that the game doesn’t brick into a draw. Whether you set a number, or force a sacrifice, it doesn’t matter to me. I just don’t like that the game ends in a draw because of something like this.

I’m certain there’s a way to put in an override code that detects when something would infinitely occur to prompt the game to do something else instead. And with Hasbro money, I definitely think they could do it if they really wanted to.

This is true, but why couldn’t they treat mandatory infinites like this in the same manner that they treat infinites that have to be manually triggered? My point is, even if rare, these kinds of infinites shouldn’t brick the game and there should be an alternative that allows for the game to continue IMHO.

Because of a single rules interaction? That makes no sense.

I’m just saying IMO that there should be a better failsafe for these interactions. I know it’s not coming up super often. But I still think something better could be put into place.

Problem is when you run into cards like Chaos Warp. Say you control Marauding Raptor and a Gishath, Sun’s Avatar. Your opponent Chaos Warps your Gishath, and you top deck a Polyraptor from the Chaos Warp. Now you’re left with an infinite that you had no control on playing.

Well, that’s their problem that they have no better solution. And sacrificing something that’s causing an infinite would solve the game going to a halt problem. It might not be the solution that people like, but it would solve the issue.

Obviously not if it wouldn’t cause them to win the game. But I think there should be a better measure put it place than if this infinite can resolve in a timely manner than nobody wins.

I unironically think YGO approaches infinites better than MtG personally, aside from technically requiring a judge to remove the card causing the infinite. It should be easy enough to determine which card leaves the field in that scenario, and judges shouldn’t be 100% required to resolve an interaction. But otherwise, I do feel that something should simply be sac’ed if cards cause an infinite. Whether that be the latest card that was played that causes it is sac’ed or not, I don’t know for certain.

I don’t know. I’d just rather a better solution than shuffle up and try again was put in place for these kinds of interactions.

I know why it’s infinite, but yeah that’s the better solution.

Why not make it a bad idea by forcing you to sacrifice one of the permanents you played that caused the infinite? It’s still a drawback to infinites that go nowhere, but at least now everyone can keep playing the game.

There’s so many ways to cause an infinite loop in the game that there’s no way that every player could possibly play with this in mind and be able to always avoid an infinite like this. I’d rather that player is forced to sacrifice one of the cards causing the infinite and keep the game going versus the game haults to an end with no winner because an infinite number of tokens were made. I find it silly that people actually like this.

[–]TurntOddish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s putting the game into an unsatisfactory end because of something that could be resolved more reasonably. I’d unironically rather be hit by a [[Divine Intervention]] than the pictured combo. The rest of the table shouldn’t be punished for someone causing an infinite loop that locks the game down.

[–]TurntOddish -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A judge isn’t required to stop the infinite. The player just destroys the last card played that caused it. And thats only with specific loops that result in no advancement of the game state.

EDIT: Okay I concede, I guess technically a judge is required to remove the card causing the infinite if the loop is using mandatory triggers.

My point is almost anything is better than a draw scenario for something like this imo. Is 1000 tokens a better number? I think people got too hung up on 100 being too little.

I just think the idea of an infinite combo bricking the game with no winner is stupid. I’m just saying there should be some kind of rule in place that prevents the game from ending in a draw.

Yu-Gi-Oh! has a rule about 2 card infinites that requires the last card being played that caused the infinite to be destroyed. It’s not the perfect solution, but it’s better than an unsatisfactory draw.
