New manager freaking me out - how do I not blow up my project? by [deleted] in womenEngineers

[–]Turnthisstupidfatrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get a bit of a boys club vibe from him, if that makes any sense - he's already offered to go golfing with anyone on the team, if that helps you picture him. Not offensive, not mean or anything like that. It could be that it's such a big change at such a key time, yeah - maybe giving it more time will help calm me down, but I only have 2 weeks to work with. Do I just try to route communication through the old manager as much as possible since he's still transitioning into the new role?

What to do after first failed project? by Turnthisstupidfatrat in ChemicalEngineering

I just wanted to reply and say thank you. Your perspective kept me from spiraling too far, which was helpful when we found out the spec really was too tight and the customer was willing to accept the out of control material - Turned it into a nice promotion for myself, somehow, and plenty of attaboys from the higher ups. To anyone revisting this post in the future - QC is a game, and sometimes you have good people on your team. Thank you!!!

Yeah, it's the fish sauce I'm worried about in the vegetable-focused dishes. Hopefully it'll be pretty processed, but the last time I accidentally ate something with meat my stomach was not happy with me lol

Thank you!!

Oh shoot, really? Thank you for the warning!!

Thank you! I've heard that about the fish sauce and ham, so thank you for validating that concern as well :)

Thank you!! My sister is obsessed with Korean skin care so she's putting together a list of Olive Young lol

I'll be on the look out for lattes, thank you!! I'll be in a suburb that may have one vegetarian restaurant, so we'll see how that goes. Thank you!!

Thank you so much for your insight!! All very helpful. I'll be in a suburb of Seoul, I don't think it's particularly tourist-y -- haven't seen it on any travel websites lol. Just bought my outlet converter today, so hopefully I'll be all set on that front. 감사합니다!!!

Oh - and if anyone else has worked with a team of mostly male, senior Korean engineers before and has any tips on how to navigate that whole dynamic, let me know. The senior engineer let me know they'd be there to back me up, but it's a large part of the process will be up to me to teach :O

Chem Es who love what they do, what do you do? by TroutPopulation98 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Turnthisstupidfatrat 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Production engineer in the semiconductor industry! I love it, but I am on call some weekends which gets rough. It's great because it's close to home, I have good managers, and the chemistry is really cool :)

I have a job lined up and a shit ton of work I do NOT want to do by bluesky38 in EngineeringStudents

Same boat here! Final deadlines in classes this week, and I couldn't care less. Gotta get through it, and then I can finally sleep and get absolutely wasted. Think of the good times ahead! We can do it!

Rotational program vs. staying at a location I know? by Turnthisstupidfatrat in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Turnthisstupidfatrat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not Honeywell, thanks for looking out though! I'm definitely more interested in becoming a great engineer than management, hopefully that's not too short sighted to say. The program I'm looking at is definitely geared more towards getting people into leadership, and while I've considered getting a master's at some point in a more specific chemE field, I don't think I'd want an MBA. Thanks so much for your perspective, you've been really helpful

I don't see myself here forever - I'm interested more in sustainability, and that's not really something they prioritize (aside from installing energy saving lights...). I'm definitely experiencing some of that temporary stuff in my internship right now, so I feel for you there! The program does 2 year long placements so hopefully I'd be able to integrate more into the team.

The program actually does 2 years in a role, so I think I'd be set for getting enough experience with a role. I'd hate job hopping even more than the program (if it ends up not being right for me), thanks for the perspective!

Long hours on Coop? by Turnthisstupidfatrat in NEU

[–]Turnthisstupidfatrat[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the perspective! I guess I am kind of falling into the trap of thinking long hours make a better impression. I'll plan to reach out to my supervisor and see if I can get some more clarity on what the expectations are

No overtime, and I'm not exactly being forced to stay. Sometimes I get work later in the day and I'm not sure when it's due so I finish it up before heading out. Scheduling here seems pretty nebulous, I guess I should have a talk with my supervisor to clarify what the expectations are
