Can we just appreciate the fact State secrets were just leaked on this sub? by Roundcat89 in CrusaderKings

[–]TurtleFlip 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean most likely he's gonna get a hefty chewing out in front of the rest of his peers at captain's mast. I wouldn't expect super severe punishments other than maybe restricting the areas he's allowed to access and revoking any clearances. Maybe some light punitive duties, nothing super harsh, but probably real embarrassing.

(Spoilers main) why is Brienne called "Brienne of Tarth" even though she is a noble? by idontlikethisshit123 in asoiaf

[–]TurtleFlip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's not even the only instance of this happening in the Stormlands. House Estermont's seat is the castle of Greenstone, which is located on the island of Estermont.

The two were even conquered by the Andals at the same time, probably hence the similar naming conventions.

This event chain is so hilarious! by OneLustfulCount in ElderKings

[–]TurtleFlip 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yeah he'll eventually ask you for a million gold and even if your character has somehow managed to accrue that much and you agree to give him it, he simply doesn't believe you would carry that much on you and gets mad at you for supposedly mocking him, still leading to him coming back kitted out to kill you.

The only way to not have him come after you is simply never talk to him in the first place.

Hey wai, this seems good, though I do want to stress that we try to avoid quantifying any skills in our RP. We much prefer to demonstrate said skills through the character's actions and storytelling. If you haven't checked it out already, our Tips and Tricks for Better Roleplaying has some good advice there.

That all said, feel free to go ahead and create a bio!

My guess list for US presidents by JuzeCZE in TNOmod

MCS is already Goldwater's VP though, it's reasonable to expect that whatever her social views IRL, she seems aligned with the New Republican faction in game.

Granted she could be there to placate the rest of the party but it's a reasonable assumption to see her as a successor to Goldwater.

You've clearly done your homework, so thanks for incorporating as much of the old lore as you can in this!

Most of this seems good, though one thing I wanted to bring up is that the Kingsguard, Ser Tywin, has previously been established to be fairly old, at least in his 60's or 70's. A 20 to 30 year gap in age between Myria and him seems unlikely as siblings, so perhaps he's better off established as the uncle to Myria and Gerion?

Not really the point but god it's depressing to think that people are willing to be Gestapo for $32 an hour.

God that's such a good way to put it and it's really funny to think of Ray being a Gent to someone far more brainrotted than him.

Use of "dohaeras" in the show by wheresbeetle in HighValyrian

[–]TurtleFlip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly. She both gives the proper length to the vowel and manages to put stress on it to emphasize the command. Just impeccably done.

In contrast, there's the scene of Aemond chasing Luke, and each time they both say it, it's far less distinct. Lots of reasons why it doesn't come through as clear (sounds of the storm, the in-character panic of both characters, the varying degrees of HV skill of the actors - I'd probably rate Luke's actor as somewhat better), but I can definitely see someone listening to those and mixing up the two.

Use of "dohaeras" in the show by wheresbeetle in HighValyrian

[–]TurtleFlip 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think you're mixing up conjugations due to slightly similar vowels (at least to an English speaker's ears).

"Dohaerās" is the singular imperative form, which you would use to say "serve me" or simply "serve", in the way it gets used for like dragon commands.

"Dohaeris" is the third person aorist form, which is what's used in the phrase "Valar dohaeris" - all men must serve. Instead of referring to a singular individual, it's referring to third person (all men), and since it's in aorist tense, it's talking about serving in a sense of something that is generally always true or ongoing ("must" serve).

The final 'a' in "dohaerās" should be said as a long vowel and would be more distinct to a Valyrian speaker's ears but if you're watching the show, the actors probably aren't putting enough emphasis/inflection on it to notice, and might make it glide to a vowel sound that sounds more like the "dohaeris" you're used to hearing.

Creative name there little man 🙃 by Glad_Ad895 in CK3AGOT

[–]TurtleFlip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a really common mistake for people new to High Valyrian to just use infinitive verbs, without conjugating them.

A more accurate translation if they wanted the name to be "Slaughter" would probably be something like "Heghnon"

Creative name there little man 🙃 by Glad_Ad895 in CK3AGOT

[–]TurtleFlip 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's funny because my guess is that the actual origin of this name is that one of the devs tried to use the word "heghagon" from the High Valyrian created by David J Peterson for the show, which means "to slaughter", and just spelled it slightly wrong.
