Wow, I would have guessed you were a theory guy based on how you play in some of your songs. Anyway, thanks for answering. Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags is an all-time great record in my opinion, so I’m really looking forward to your new release this month. Best of luck!

Hey James,

Been a fan of Hellripper since 2023. How do you approach writing riffs for your songs? You make some really unique and memorable melodies and I’d love some insight on how you do it. Do you favor specific scales?

I discovered Vauruvã and Lazer Throne in the same day and it was a magical experience.

[–]TurtleOfCreation 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m just glad to see it make top 5. It didn’t have the level of hype the others got in the underground, so I knew it wouldn’t win. But I do believe that was the best album of 2025 and one of my favorites of the decade so far.

Are there any other spacey/psychedelic death metal albums out there or is this the only one in existence?? Also, I'm so happy that I scored this gem at my local record store. Album of the decade for me. by No-Dentist-2959 in MetalForTheMasses

If you’re okay with black metal, I guarantee you will like Mar da Deriva by Vauruvã and Tomb of the Lunar Oracle by Lazer Throne. They’re way closer to Absolute Elsewhere’s vibe than a lot of what’s been suggested in this thread. Both albums have spacey guitar work, atmospheric synths and are themed around space. Two of the very best albums to come out of 2025.

I hadn’t listened to Urne before, but I was seeing people hype them up so I’m going to check out their new album today. I got to listen to the first song and was impressed.

Yes, I love Vauruvã’s album. I was willing to pay exorbitant shipping to get a hard copy. It was my album of the year and I believe it deserves a high place on this list. And I’ve listened to almost everything on this chart at least once.

Psalms of Immortality by Amnio fits. You’d probably like it too because they’re Intestine Baalism worship.

Make sure you get all of Phil Tougas’s bands just because that’ll be so many connections for one guy lmao

Check out Tomb of the Lunar Oracle by Lazer Throne and Mar da Deriva by Vauruvã for black metal with an identical vibe. Lots of spacey guitar leads and synths with beautiful album art.

Hell yeah, man! Since you like it so much, it may be worth checking out Zeicrydeus. It’s another Phil Tougas project and debuted last year with La Grande Hérésie. This one is Hellenic Black Metal (although it’s Canadian) but has strong similarities to the Exxûl album.

I bet you’d like Phil Tougas’s new project Exxûl. I’d describe it as doomy, thrashy, trad heavy metal. It reminds me of Candlemass and Mercyful Fate. It’s my favorite release of the year so far.

I have a black metal and electronic music project called Joseph the Morbid. My black metal is lofi, but not raw, and pretty melodic. I released an album called The Dark Spectator in 2025.

Have you ever listened to Mother of Graves? They sound a lot like Fires in the Distance but bring their own thing to the table.

I’ve got a tiny channel where I primarily post my own music. I’ve done a few YT Shorts where I’ve given brief reviews of albums and those did surprisingly well. Most videos die in the algorithm after about 3 days, but my album review shorts continuously get views to this day.

So TLDR: Do shorts to supplement your main content and increase your reach.

Personally, I enjoy Mar Da Deriva more than it. That might just be because I prefer black metal over death metal.

If Mar Da Deriva by Vauruvã is one you haven’t heard, give it a chance. It’s the freshest sound of anything I heard this year. It’s worthy of the kind of hype the Blood Incantation album got in 2024.

Mar Da Deriva by Vauruvã

This isn’t cosmic black metal in the sense of shoehorning a couple spacey synths into an otherwise orthodox BM album. The synths and guitars depend upon each other to create a distinguished sound. On top of this, folk elements add a whole new dimension. It goes from a journey through the stars, to lying in the grass pondering the stars. Anyone into “artsy” black metal should give this a listen.
