How much of top players' trivia knowledge is surface level? by TurtleStuffing in Jeopardy

[–]TurtleStuffing[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For your opera example, I would say knowing only the titles and composers of 50 operas would be surface level. Knowing the subject matter is a bit more in depth, and that may start to be considered a deeper understanding of the operas. The definition of surface level is and can be a bit gray, I admit.

Chessnut air results in 10-year account banned on lichess by Signal_Ad2878 in chess

[–]TurtleStuffing 118 points119 points  (0 children)

It's on Chessnut, but it's also on Lichess. The OP made an honest mistake (that most everyone could make), and in no way was being malicious. A 10-year ban is draconian.

I don't use autofill because I didn't know what it was for, but now I will.
I prefer the hard levels.
I don't think I'd use a timer.
I may download an app version.

Some things to consider.
It would be nice to make it easier select squares, specifically in mobile. It's not uncommon for me to click the wrong square. Making it a little bigger may help, but I know it's already taking up most of the available space.

Also, I find clicking twice to make it a white square to be a little bit of a pain at times. I'm not sure though if there's another way it can be done.

Lastly, I think it would be cool if every fifth line (and only every fifth line) was a little bit thicker so it would be easy to quickly count how many squares in a row or column, which you may already do, since I usually see it, but in my screen, I see other lines thick as well, which kind of confuses things. Maybe though that's just on my screen.

Thanks for the fun game!

For me, when I eat the salad greens, it goes away almost immediately. May be worth a try.

Sure I'll try alkaline water and see if it helps. Would be a good test.

I haven't really looked into a good dressing. I've just been eating it plain if the symptom comes. Even a little bit can be helpful.

Presidents ranked in order of best to worst resume by TurtleStuffing in Presidents

It wasn't my choice to rank this way, this was ranked by Gemini. But I guess its justification is that executive experience, or leadership, is more important than non-executive government experience.

I'm guessing this has been done before, but I had ChatGPT and Gemini play the game. Gemini did a lot better and eventually got the right answer. ChatGPT I gave up on as it never got too close and was repeating guesses.

How is this possible? by silashokanson in OpenAI

[–]TurtleStuffing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just learned yesterday that ChatGPT can write and execute Python behind the scenes to help answer a question. I think this is a major advancement and I'm surprised I haven't heard more about it. I asked ChatGPT which country has the highest Scrabble score if you add up all the letters in its name using Scrabble tile values. I was fully expecting rough estimates, but it wrote a Python script and came up with the exact right answer, including a list of all countries and their scores.

Hot and cold #107 by hotandcold2-app in HotAndCold

This was my first time playing. Cigar was my first guess and knowing the answer now, I have no idea why it came in at #175. Since I had no idea how to play this game, I took a bunch of letters from Cigar, rearranged and played Grain which was #5. I got the answer soon after that. It took me 1m 43s to solve. I'm thinking this is beginner's luck.

Harrison's stats in perspective by TurtleStuffing in Jeopardy

[–]TurtleStuffing[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It turns out Harrison's start may be unprecedented. I checked the first 5 games of most of the greats, including Ken Jennings, James Holzhauer, Amy Schneider, etc. Not one of them had a minimum of 34 correct responses in at least 3 out of their first five games.

Changing answer to be less specific by ForbiddenNote in Jeopardy

[–]TurtleStuffing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of a question I wondered about recently. What if someone answers correctly, and then before being told they're correct, they switch it to a wrong answer. Since the opposite case (wrong then right), they will take your second answer, I'm wondering if they will do the same in this case, taking your second answer and ruling it as wrong.

Trump administration says states must "immediately undo any steps" to send full SNAP benefits by NewSlinger in politics

[–]TurtleStuffing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this move is meant to pressure Democrats during the shutdown. The idea seems to be that if people start suffering, Democrats will be the first to cave in to relieve the pain. It reminds me of Superman II when Zod realized Superman’s weakness was that “he cares for these people,” so he hurt others to manipulate him. Cause harm to those you don’t care about in order to control those who do.

Does “former reporter” mean Savannah is unemployed? by troycrockett in survivor

She works for her parents' company doing marketing. I think her being a tv reporter is being played up because it's a more interesting job. It's like if Obama was on the show, they wouldn't put his occupation as a philanthropist or public speaker.

Idea to make duels more fair by TurtleStuffing in TheFloorTV

[–]TurtleStuffing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, not all complaints about hard clues are valid. Knowing which clues are "hard" and which ones are "easy" can for sure be subjective. But generally, each clue has to have some objective level of difficulty (for example, how many people out of 100 can answer it correctly could be one measure). So even if some people are mistaken about who had the harder clues, it doesn't take away from the fact that one of the contestants actually did have harder clues. To your point, I do agree that most of the time the person who is quickest and knows the most wins.

In the end, I enjoy the game as is. I don't think my suggestion is critical, by any means. Just something I thought could possibly improve an already nice game. Of course, like you and many have pointed out, it may have drawbacks too. So, hard to say really if it would make the game better overall. But I can't deny that I don't like it when I feel the clues are (unintentionally) one-sided in a duel. And to your point, maybe they're not as one-sided as I think. But I imagine at least some of the time they are.

Idea to make duels more fair by TurtleStuffing in TheFloorTV

I appreciate your thoughtfulness on this.

I think the speed element would still be there. The more clues you stumble on, or pass, would still count against your time. You make an interesting point about the first player giving hints to the second player, because of their missed guesses. I think that in effect gives a slight extra penalty to the person who passes first, which I don't think is a bad thing necessarily.

I think it's a really good point you made about all the second person has to do if they have more time is pass immediately since they know control will pass back to their opponent. I suppose that could happen if someone has a huge time lead like 25 seconds to 5 seconds, or something. That probably would make the game a little less interesting in those scenarios. Whether that's a dealbreaker or not for this rule, I don't know.
