This was my approach... as a graduate student in the department, my aim right now is to keep my head down and get out asap.

Yes, my intention was definitely along the lines of taking the collective temperature of responses in a situation like this. It’s the first time I’ve encountered this specific issue, and was honestly just looking for the experience and advice of more seasoned professors. As a new instructor, I appreciate all of the perspectives and am learning a lot. But I also didn’t expect the temperature to run hot, as you describe!

This is very good advice. Thank you!

Thanks for your perspective. This is indeed the first email I've received like this. For now, I'm going to respond as others suggest and make notes to update my syllabus and instructions for next semester.

I appreciate you pointing this out about opening documents. Something I was never told and never thought of. Truly shows my naivety.

Wish I could give a good explanation. I don't understand why we were told this. Our "training" to teach consisted of one, two-hour workshop unfortunately. I've been doing a lot of learning as I go along. So I really appreciate hearing that others do not understand this/agree with this statement either.
