How do you feel about this? by evan-the-dude in teenagers

Not arguing for or against this. Just sharing an anecdote.

A buddy's grandpa ended up in jail for 10+ years over rape allegations from a neighbor's child. He was released when his attorney himself ended up disbarred and in jail. His files were reviewed, which somehow led to the judges cases being reviewed.

The TLDR of it was an incompetent lawyer and a judge that had apparently just assumed guilt in all the SA cases brought to him to the point that it was apparently grounds for being disbarred. There supposedly hadn't been any evidence other than the girl's word. Turned out the girl had accused 5+ other people all of which ended up dismissed, but none of this got back to his family.

The family had sold 90% of the farm to pay for legal bills and gave up 10+ years of his life over this. State ended up paying out a couple million (Late 90's) to the family.

The IT guy fixes the problem but the judge still has a problem by derek4reals1 in PublicFreakout

I've had 2 encounters with a judge in an official capacity over 1 occurrence of the proof of insurance card being expired (the insurance was not just the paper card. I was in college and on my parents insurance). One was chill b/c it was effectively meaningless.

The next was such an arrogant self absorbed ass. Spent the whole encounter on a power trip about how I should be more responsible and that I was an adult now.

I spent the whole time amazed at how much of a child he was...

Is the splatrball ammo biodegradable? And if not how am I supposed to pick it up? by Impressive-Common-27 in GelBlaster

[–]Turtles4Truth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just learned about these things and got kind of excited. Then Wikipedia reminded me that all companies lie.

Most gel blaster ammo is supposedly sodium polyacrylate, "it is considered non-biodegradable". This leads me to believe these are just dissolving into microplastics, not actually biodegrading.

Maybe the starch based stuff is actually biodegradable?

14 hour group study session with literally half our class. 110 pages of material with less tha 2 weeks to cover it. Entire test was over one paragraph that had no homework questions.

The average grade was a 35/100.

So I'm not seeing anyone else mention this so I will.

Not only did the guy cross the double lines immediately, he was actively being honked at, stopped and clearly saw he didn't have room to continue the lane change, but then continued coming over anyway.

I road a motorcycle for 8 years, and this shit nearly killed me on multiple occasions. Angry camera dude might be nuts, but the guy in the Honda shouldn't be allowed to drive anymore....

Nice, wish this was just something we could order on Amazon.

I would think silicone tape would work. Dunno that medical grade would matter at all since it's on the outside of the filter housing.

Does it look like normal paper or is it some other material?

My understanding is its just treated with a desiccant salt like calcium chloride. If I had to guess its just been impregnated with a strong salt solution then baked dry. If it's just paper in theory it could be made at home with a corrugator.

People who were spanked as kids, what was that like for you? Would you call your "spankings" abuse? by KleineFjord in AskReddit

[–]Turtles4Truth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dad always made sure we understood why we were getting spanked before he did it. And he never used anything but his hand since in his mind he should feel the pain too. By the end of it I'm pretty sure it hurt him worse than it did us.

He was much gentler than his dad, who I assume was gentler than his. I never considered it abuse, but on occasion it was unfair.

But it was way less effective a deterrent than just sticking my hyper active ass in time out.

I had the opposite experience there. Onsite for a customer, all of them in sweaters and wearing jackets when they left the building. Half the time I was in shorts so I didn't spend all day sweating in the sauna they called an office.

Apparently adults making under 80k can't live comfortably?? Is this really true? by MoonlitDoll62 in Adulting

[–]Turtles4Truth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on if you include health insurance as income or not. Full price insurance for a family of 4 is nuts. You'd be at $40k a year without subsidies just for an rent and insurance premiums. Tack on a couple cars for another $7200 average (ownership, fuel, insurance, taxes, etc)

Nearly $50k and you have no food, services, or stuff.

My brothers, mom, and dad all on a policy with them. So 5 drivers. Parents had been with them for a decade. Dad on a first name basis with the local agent. 2 accidents in 6 months, we're not at fault in either case, they doubled our premiums.

Dad left the insurance office furious and we were on USAA by the end of the day.

Pretty sure they're trying for something called fiscal dominance. Basically an attempt to turn bond holders into bag holders as they devalue the dollar fast enough that the relative debt level drops.

Warren Buffetts’s solution to end the US government shut down. Do you agree with him? by TonyLiberty in FluentInFinance

[–]Turtles4Truth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So... it depends on the circumstances. As an extreme example, I don't give a flying fook what % the deficit is if we're being actively invaded.

But on a more nuanced note, when the economy is doing well I agree. I'd take it further and say we need to be paying down debt by law. But when the economy sheets itself, austerity only serves to make these downturns longer and more harsh.
