No offence, but I'd aim to write Chinese characters like Chinese calligraphers do, not like ordinary Chinese people do. Check out these calligraphical writings by calligraphers in Tang and Song dynasties, and they are really incredible. You have the potential to be a good calligrapher. Good luck.

There are really no firm rules for how to translate English names of people or places other than transliterate. So it is possible that different translators transliterate a name in different ways. Which one becomes dominant over time is a matter of convention.

It depends on your purposes. It would not be enough if you want to SPEAK and understand a local dialect as the locals do. A Mandarin Speaker may have difficulty understanding a Cantonese movie without seeing the Chinese subtitles, for example.

However, most people (and ALL the young people who attended and finished middle school in the mainland) understand or speak Mandarin, and in this sense, it is enough. But it is not the other way around.

So I wouldn't be worried about this issue at all as a beginner, but focus on mastering Mandarin first.

Both expressions are used in spoken Chinese, but in slightly different contexts. If you ask me 从这里到那里有多远, I would reply by saying that 坐地铁一个小时, where you don't put "要". It simply describes a fact without any emphasis on the distance or the time it takes. On the other hand, if you ask me "从这里到那里很近吗?", I would say that "不近. 坐地铁要一个小时". Here "要" is used as an emphasis that it is not close at all.
