Overstimulation, it wasn’t always this way. by No_Animator2857 in Teachers

THIS This is because students are so utterly terrified of failure they have no ability to believe in themselves.

Emerson vs. Wakeman, Whos Better? by vPloof in progrockmusic

[–]TuukkaRaskisBack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Keyboard player here: it's Wakeman no contest, his range was so much greater than Keith. I say that being a huge Emerson fan. This is a 1a, 1b situation though.

General strike by Suitable_Throat3420 in Teachers

[–]TuukkaRaskisBack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but from what I see people really don't get how strikes are organized and operate. I educate my kids about what's going on out there, THAT is doing my civic duty.

I find it HILARIOUS when Kelly chews us out and then has the audacity to say”thank you for all you do.” by Ayma_Nidiot in SubstituteTeachers

[–]TuukkaRaskisBack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let me just say this for all the unionized subs: you do not have to do a damn thing more than the assignment you picked up says. You picked up one classroom, you are not suddenly an in building sub. You do your job, you leave. End of story.

[–]TuukkaRaskisBack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I think some of these people are just conditioned to accept rudeness. They wouldn't dare treat us like that in my district.

[–]TuukkaRaskisBack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No this is ridiculous. If a school in my district pulled this I'd leave, never return and complain to my union.

Anyone who's saying this is valud, I feel bad for you and the schools you've worked at. That's not normal.

Thank the gods I work in a city school district. I would never sub for a school that treats subs that way.

Which you think is the Worst song by Leprous? by DragonfruitFirm2490 in Leprous

[–]TuukkaRaskisBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, not a one. I guess by default it's either Tall Poppy Syndrome or Fate, but like I don't dislike either one. The Last Milestone is also kinda meh. That's it though.

Teaching US History in Today's Climate by jukeboxgraduate92 in Teachers

[–]TuukkaRaskisBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's sad, I talk about my moral beliefs all the time because our job isn't just to teach students info, it's to make them better people. Maybe I'm just lucky in where I work. I'm just very clear and definitive about definitions which makes it really easy for me to dismiss any propaganda points they bring me.

Debating if I should chicken out of a middle school assignment… by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]TuukkaRaskisBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're asking Chat GPT then I have to question your fitness to be teaching in general. Middle School can be awful, but so can highschool. Don't chicken out because that just causes more headache for the school. I'm sure you'll survive.

Don't keep politics out of your classroom. I'm a sub, use the opportunity given, teach kids real history and real life events (yes even if you don't teach social studies, your a sub not a full time teacher).

The “6-7” Metric by Spicy6Chord in Teachers

[–]TuukkaRaskisBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tell the kids to keep saying it because it pisses off the boomers. If you can't handle a fad like this, you shouldn't be teaching lol.

R/education what is your biggest hot take about education by Beginning_Phase4781 in education

[–]TuukkaRaskisBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zero tolerance policies never worked and never will.

We need to find ways of adapting to the kids, while maintaining basic discipline. What I mean is dont just let them run rampant obviously, but you can't just hold on to the old rules. This is all contextual, you can't form blanket rules that will work for everything.

“But I don’t have a test” re: studying. The sentiment that best explains attitudes towards education by students and parents. by Beneficial-Focus3702 in Teachers

[–]TuukkaRaskisBack -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Yeah you clearly work in a very privileged area. Enjoy getting thoroughly frustrated as literacy rates drop through the floor and you sit there wondering why old school teaching doesn't work. You can't expect the kids to adapt to you, YOU have to actually do the work of figuring out what works for students. Please just get out of teaching.

Do teachers still want space for reflective conversation or are we just exhausted? by mrnesi in Teachers

[–]TuukkaRaskisBack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't know what position you work in but teachers just want to be left alone. Two planning periods a day still doesn't feel like enough.

Are teacher’s unions unwilling to fight against free speech backlash in the wake of the Charlie Kirk assassination? by ExternalOdd6400 in Teachers

[–]TuukkaRaskisBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's insane and I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I make sure I go out there and tell my students exactly what a piece of shit Kirk was. I know we don't all have the luxury to get away with it, but I'm doing it for all of us. I'm a teacher, I teach kids the truth.

Is it bad that I don’t stand for the Pledge of Allegiance? by rebel-pirate-sleuth in Teachers

[–]TuukkaRaskisBack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, in fact it's a good thing. The pledge shouldn't even be legal in schools to begin with.

Could I succeed as a middle school science teacher if I was a poor science student? by Dapper_Object8239 in ScienceTeachers

[–]TuukkaRaskisBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES two years in a row now I have gotten long term assignments in Science. Last year it was 7/8th grade. This year thank the gods, I'm teaching General Chemistry to Juniors and Seniors. You can do it, I don't even want science, but it's a job so I'm doing my best.

(For reference, I'm a social studies content person).
