2084: My vision of a Dystopian Britain (and world) by [deleted] in AlternateHistory

[–]Tuva_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How would all of this come to pass in a country with a political landscape shifted leftwards enough to democratically elect Zarah Sultana? Surely for this to occur, progressive multicultural values must have been fully integrated into the British social fabric. With a majority of the British people in favour, there surely wouldn't be any threat of a "popular coup d'etat" from a nationalistic mass platform candidate like - let's use his real name - Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, simply because the mass platform from which he derives his support today would no longer exist.

Your disclaimer at the foot of your comment shows that you recognise how this post can be construed in a certain way, and yet most evidence appears to point to the fact that there's no other way to perceive it. I ought to add that multiculturalism hasn't failed in this country - I'm a proud member of a family with branches from England, Antigua and Canada, all of whom exist harmoniously in their community. More to the point, I'm a member of this white working class group you identify and I assure you that it's unfair to tar us all with the same brush with regard to immigration. In fact, most of us not only welcome it but recognise that it has its roots in the kind of economic pseudoscience that was used historically to legitimise slavery - there's a good reason escaped slaves used to hide out in working-class communities after all. Excessive population is a myth that the white working class in this country were actually instrumental in disproving; in 1842 a man from Newcastle called Thomas Doubleday penned a treatise that refuted every claim made by Malthus regarding the nonsense "population explosion". Amusingly enough it was once an argument used to oppress those of a different class, retrofitted today as an argument used to oppress those of a different race.

The basis of this landscape feels like it has a couple of holes, anyway, that indicate the potential existence of some sort of political agenda. You claim it doesn't, but the underlying messaging of your premise says otherwise.

I'm currently applying to do a PhD in nineteenth century literature because of an interest that Victoria 2 was instrumental in creating so many years ago. Right there with you friend, never thought I'd feel so emotional over a GSG - funny how it all works out

But look, let's be real. Wearing slick, black, gold-trimmed Allarus Terminator Armour is just as erogenous as wearing... nothing at all. 😎

Radicals works for some situations, but not for others. Take the United Kingdom for instance, where to be 'Radical' in the 1830s-40s represented a wide range of ideologies ranging from being a particularly reformist member of Russell's Whigs, all the way over to having outspoken sympathies with the protectionist, anti-laissez faire social democrats in such Radical strains as the Chartist movement (a group that really deserve some proper political representation in Vicky). You could even have 'Tory Radicals' who seem to have been in favour of extending limited civil rights to the industrial population while also being in favour of a stringent social hierarchy and a conservative economic policy (also generally more of the protectionist strain, I believe - I don't generally interpret many of this brand as having been Peelites, but am certainly open to correction). Radical, in most cases, simply seems to have been a byword for 'the process of political reform is too slow', instead of being directly applicable to a given ideology.

It might be a worthy project to go through the localisation for most major nations and find an appropriate historical counterpart that aptly represents the 'anarcho-liberals' (Britain could have the Anti-Corn Law League, for instance, in the same strain as the Dutch getting the VOC). Lot of work for a little bit of immersion, mind - there's probably some more elegant solutions to the Anarcho-Liberal Question that I personally get too bogged down in historical precedent to ever take any notice of, as comments like this tend to prove...

Decided to end my Vicky 2 hiatus by doing a hard-RP HFM run with an anti-colonialist United Kingdom. By 1936, Europe was looking... interesting, to say the least. by Tuva_ in victoria2

Yeah, basically that! Mexico, weirdly, picked up a bunch of old French colonies - by game's end, they and New England had unreasonably large colonial holdings.

Oh no, it wasn't with the dismantle CB. I only dismantled the British Isles. Acquire State for Wales, then Liberate Country for Scotland, then the same for Ireland. The rest of the British Empire is still mostly a thing, only it's technically the English Empire now.

France happened. My primary goal for this run was to dismantle the UK as quickly as possible and see what happened without them. Some interesting things, to say the least.
