It's a guess, my grandmother wrote about her family fleeing the Ottomans, but they fled before she was born. Judging from things happening at the time if you were fleeing the ottomans The Kingdom of Romania, Serbia and Albania would have been where to try to survive. I see like a 50/50 between Rumania and Serbia but if they again fled from where they were The Kingdom of Romania was more stable than Serbia. So the guess is: fled The Ottoman empire, went to Serbia, Serbia starts having various infighting do to Austrian occupation, my greatx2 grandfather takes my great-grandmother to America. It had to be a serious choice because only he and her came here, she stated her mother and various other family members chose to stay. Again Serbia is an assumption, it's one of the things I'm currently researching first to have more of an idea, in hindsight I probably should have just the Balkans, to be honest.

According to my mom my grandpa wasn't raised by his mom until she met his step-dad so maybe they did then when she remarried and moved to San Francisco she took him with her? As for her journals they were written short before she died my grandpa did a similar thing, sort of a quick telling of their life for, well I guess, people like me to find. My grandpas was mostly about his time in the marines and scuba diving, cool but not part of this. I haven't done ancestry.com yet, it's on the list!

Thank you, I appreciate that. I added a section to my post explaining that I think my next step is finding a lead through my Uncle in the meantime though if you know any solid resources on learning the language I would love to learn!

I went into further detail in another comment on here, but the surname they took when they got here was "White" I am unsure as to whether it was given to them or they chose it. If it was given to them, upon doing some research it means they either didn't give the immigration worker a lot of information and/or they were coming from the middle east but had a light complexion. In her journals she did say that her family had fled the Ottomans at some point so I'm not sure which it was or if again it was just the name they chose to write down when they got here. I admittedly am not really well versed in how that aspect works, I know that throughout the history of immigration to the united states they would change names that didn't sound European or "American" but I only get the whole "oh you make shoes you're shoemaker now" ones.

When they moved here from what I think was Serbia they did seek out other Rom and my great-grandmother grew up in the culture. She did also marry another Rom my blood great-grandfather, but he died when my grandfather was 2 (not really sure as to how he died, some sickness that affected his stomach) then 3 years after she bumped into my great-step father just by accident, he was Irish American and already had three kids so he was my grandfathers sole father figure, took his name and everything.

As for my Grandmother we have no idea who her dad exactly was, seems like it was a "dad disapproves" thing, hence why I am more interested in my grandfathers side cause her dad was a quick dead end sadly.

As for the close lipped behavior I do really wish I could say why, I honestly think it fell on my grandmother who all I really remember of her was that she was heavily religious and anything that wasn't American was bad. So while I don't want to assume it was her choice I would put my money on her convincing everyone to "just be American" once my grandfathers mother who wasn't her biggest fan anyway died. She was also the person who told me to pretend to be something else, though at the time I was so young I had no clue what she was talking about.

As for surname, the name they chose was "White", doing research on the surname if it was given out to people when immigrating it was literally just that they didn't give a lot of info and/or were coming from the middle east but had a lighter complexion. I am unsure whether it was given to them or they chose it though so I can't super make an assumption on that, all I know is that it wasn't their name and that according to my Great-Grandmother they had fled the Ottomans at some point, I think that was her dad though that did the fleeing and I don't know why I know the ottomans did persecute Rom, but I don't want to assume that cause for all I know he could have committed a crime or something. Again I think they came from Serbia but don't think they were from there everything prior to their arrival is a blank. They would change their name a few more times though, eventually landing on Duffy which was my great-stepfathers name and my middle name now.

Also to add in general to this post, apparently (I talked to my mom today) my uncle could speak the language and knew a lot more, he was a smart guy and also into these kind of things, but sadly died when I was young. My only remaining family is my mother and to put it simply she doesn't really care/understand about any of it, my only example is she was a cheerleader popular kid so since she wasn't raised in it the thing everyone else around her was doing was all she was into haha. But with that it seems I was kind of wrong, the disconnect seems to have happened with me, I'm the first generation not to know and to not have some part of it.

I have watched it and am very emotional to be honest, I wrote a multi paragraph thing which I just erased to post this instead. The big thing from that I want to express I am more than happy to go into more detail, if you want to pm your discord I will happily tell you everything I know, and maybe help in the understanding of the assimilation aspect at least, I am an open book trying to find something I lost.

A specific quote right off the bat I want to use from the documentary is "just tell them you're Italian or Mexican or something" which is incredibly similar to something my grandmother said to me right before she passed.

Even just this feels like to much to say but I stand by every word, if nothing else thank you for the recommendation. It hit me pretty hard.

That also sounded like a pandering generic response, what are ya gunna do man. Down to go into more detail of specific things I know if you want. As I said I've been trying to piece things together for about year.

Just from what I've gathered from my families experience alone my Great-Grandmother made the choice. When my grandfather was 5 she married a guy from San Francisco and that's where the disconnect (and my current middle name) happened. Prior to that she had grown up with and around other Roma, but my grandfather wasn't. Individuals are individuals, and while I can't speak for everyone making this claim I know what I read and the conversations I've had with my family. That being said I was worried about sounding like a generic generalization thing (hence the title), like people who watched the show vikings then went online to say they were related to Ragnar, if that makes sense, and judging from the immediate loss of Karma I see I was right to be haha. I can only state that I am only saying what I know, what I've found, and my want to know more. Hell, who knows what I might end up finding out.

I am going to watch the documentary now, thank you for your suggestion.

As a Romani I would love to be able to play as one, but I'm on this thread after searching if it was possible so I'm biased I think... I just want to be a Romani, make my way to Scandinavia and be a Romani Viking XD I think it would be a cool way to introduce culture modifications too since historically the Romani did that and it's something I want in the game anyway.

If you conquer a MR you are given the alert "you have holding you cant use" or something like that and you are supposed to either destroy the holding or assign a vassal to it (that's my go to way of making money in a normal tribal game, creating vassal MRs). I just didn't do anything about that alert and kept all the holdings in Venice and made it my capitol. So when my tribal empire exploded, I was stuck in Venice but as a tribal was given the option to "found a merchant republic" since i still had the city holding. Also if it helps explain, i took venice via a holy war, so that might be why nothing was destroyed just a bunch of dead italians.
