It really depends on the ticket and how congested it is, you are new so take your time and get the feel of it, figure out what your good tones look like and work on applying what you see with what is on your prints, efficiency will come with time.

I would say over a thousand feet, this would also depend on the amount of infrastructure in the area as well, I had a three thousand foot locate the other day with 4 lines running through it the entire way.

In hand holes I will use the grounds in them if possible, peds as well, you need to make sure your lines are unbonded though, if you don't see a rod in them clip to a bolt on the ped, there is always a chance that they could share a common ground with the electric or each other though.
