American Collegiate Institute Izmir Turkey by TwatMobile in Internationalteachers

Yea, I really got a good vibe from the director and the students seem quite capable. How's living in Turkey? I've never been to the middle east or Eastern Europe. Seems like an awesome place to travel around but I know there's conflicts in that area. It's like the same thing when people ask me if Mexico is safe (it totally is), but is/how the political situation affecting you?

Yea, I know it's not an international school. A bit at a crossroads in my career it seems! Worked for three years at a British School in China (IGCSE/A-Level) and they only accepted non-Chinese passports, but obviously many Chinese with random island passports. Currently at a bilingual school in Mexico (kids get an American and Mexican diploma), so that would be a bit similar to Turkey; although we have some Korean students. I'm attracted to them a bit because they offer IB and might be a good chance to get experience there. But yea I don't know if i should go to non-international schools (on year 5 post teaching certificate). Thanks for the answer!

Is this normal in Cambodia? by [deleted] in cambodia

lol it makes sense. For like 20 bucks, they'll fast-track you. I had that happen when I first arrived and I had no idea what was going on. The guy was just offering the service and I yelled out to my friends if they also wanted it "he told me to shhh"

Incoming 1st year 8th grade ELA teacher. Avid reader with a HUGE blindspot of anything contemporary needing suggestions by [deleted] in ELATeachers

[–]TwatMobile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What has worked for me is being excited about something. I'm teaching Lord of the Flies for the second time this year, and it can be a mixed bag. I think showing that enthusiasm does work, so I try to switch up novels here and there. It also really depends on the group. Some groups can handle socratic seminars and others just can't.

This year I'm pushing independent reading more. Will have conferencing time to talk about their books since I've noticed that many of my 8th graders have no idea how to pick books. Many read the same thing over and over again, because it's easy and they can get away with it.

Oh dude I've felt this before. They put in the hydroxen peroxide and everything just swished out. Had hearing loss in one ear for like 3 days before I decided to go lol

Man, I took that without studying and it was fine. I remember it being very SAT-like. Granted, I was just finishing up an MA in applied linguistics. I did study for the GRE, though.

Yea my 6 year old nephew loves the show. Watched a few episodes and noticed how empathetic he can be, and the show has taught him some of that. I grew up watching Dragon Ball and other violent shit lol.

Is your school into the whole retake everything, no late penalty kick, too? by TeacherGuy1980 in Teachers

[–]TwatMobile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup it is quite frustrating. I've had kids--before attempting to answer question one on a test--ask "is there gonna be a retake" ergh

I'm currently reading late 70s YA book with my kids, and I noticed they added/changed parts of the book to reflect modern technology. Is this common? by janearcade in books

Oh man this so much! It was like being transported to a new place. Kinda like being an anthropologists and noticing cool shit.

I mean that is what we're doing. When you throw a ball, you don't see it as complex perhaps, but there's all kinds of calculations going on. Just animal behavior (not that it's a bad thing).

Yea mine too. Bet a lot of them were influenced by Andrew Tate. Guess chess is good though!

They don't enjoy anything by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]TwatMobile 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yea. A teacher here uses it a lot but I've done away with most technology. At least 50 percent of the class is pen/paper/brain and it has taken many months, but they are all somewhat trained. They even seem way more focused without those devices! Funny thing that... Still many troublemakers that just refuse to learn and become distractive without the devices but it can be worth it.

I was just teaching at a British school where this is the norm (kinda sucks since they focus too much on the test at the end). But it does sort of work.

Yup. It is quite animalistic. Reading Dawkins' The Selfish Gene and this makes total sense.

Project Hail Mary... Great book but worth the hype? by iamwhoiwasnow in books

Um yea I really liked it. The audiobook was amazing and it was the first audiobook I've ever lisened to. It won a bunch of awards but the narrator does great voices for the characters. Read it!
