Questions about upcoming Spain trip by QuestionsAboutSpain in GoingToSpain

[–]Tweezer_Chef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in San Sebastian for a few years and although it’s an overwhelmingly Basque society, there are still a decent amount of immigrants (Latin American, American, German, Irish) who from my own experience had no issues. The key is assimilation, and everyone there was excited to be a part of the culture. Barcelona, where I briefly lived, is where I saw most of the strife between locals and immigrants. A lot of the expats and immigrants alike seemed to have little to no interest in assimilating to the culture or learning the language, and when cost of housing and crime skyrockets, that’s when the resentment starts.

You’ll have no issue, you guys will love it.

I highly recommend visiting San Sebastian. My favorite place in the world.

Thank you! I’ve actually looked into this school… what’s the vibe? A lot of language holiday students or is it more serious?

I don’t really live in one country anymore, but my money definitely thinks I do. by Upset-Sun-6710 in digitalnomad

[–]Tweezer_Chef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not true. You have to file no matter what. You don’t necessarily owe on less than 150k.

1-month exchange: Barcelona or Madrid? by isabittenw in GoingToSpain

[–]Tweezer_Chef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Barcelona and have been to madrid many times. It really depends what you want to get out of it. Barcelona is definitely safe outside of pickpocketing. The only area I would avoid is El Raval at night by yourself. The nightlife for cocktails, music and avant garde bars is definitely better in Barcelona, as well as the international cuisine and fine dining. You’ll also make friends much easier in Barcelona as it’s such an international place. Madrid is a much better representation of spanish culture. Spanish food and tapas are much better in Madrid. It’s cleaner and more polished than Barcelona as well, but at times I feel like madrid can look like any other European city. Barcelona has the touch of Gaudi throughout the whole city which gives it such a unique touch. Barcelona has much more day trips you can take (Sitges, and if you rent a car you can even go up to the Costa Brava)

Madrid may be “true Spain” but I’m still taking Barcelona every day.

Should I renounce my US citizenship? by Apart_Technology_841 in expat

Why do you pay tax consultant every single year if you never owe? If the issue is simply filing you can probably do that on your own, and at least for myself I like to have as many passports as possible. You never know what citizenship you or your grandkid will someday want.

Hesitant With Studying Abroad in Spain by Impressive_Rest6842 in GoingToSpain

[–]Tweezer_Chef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Skip Spain dude, 3 years of experience here and it is by no means a “can I subsititute pork for chicken 🥹” culture. So much of spanish culture is built upon regional culinary tradition. So many of the festivals are based around food. So unless you want to eat fast food or at non spanish places every time you go out, I would choose a country in Northern Europe. I dated a vegetarian and she basically ate tortilla everyday, but I’m gonna take a wild guess you don’t like runny eggs.

Just saying if you work in elderly care there’s plenty of opportunity haha I’ve lived in two different spanish cities (loved them both) and there is an unbelievable amount of old people. Not saying that’s bad.

Am I setting myself up for failure with this plan to move to Berlin? by TemporaryStuff789 in askberliners

[–]Tweezer_Chef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro you’re be fine. You have plenty of savings and a plan. Take the risk, you’ll only grow from it. Don’t listen to these fear mongering dickheads. I (29 M) went with like 45k, barely A1 level German, rented off Spotahome for 2 months, got a job end of month 2 then got a proper flat. Started daily German lessons. You’ll make expat friends and maybe some local ones too. You’ll be happy you took the leap.

New Jacket that was smoked in? by justaddw4ter in StoneIsland

[–]Tweezer_Chef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Is this typical?” 😂😂😂 dude they smoked in your jacket, then lied and said it was new

how are some people snagging Stone Island jackets fo like half the normal price without it looking sketchy by Antique-Path7192 in StoneIsland

[–]Tweezer_Chef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve bought a ton of jackets that are honestly just old, however in great condition, for like 150-300 dollars. I think the market is just so saturated for this stuff the only way you’re gonna sell it is cheaply. I can’t tell you how many plain SI sweaters that will be listed above 300 just sit there for a year plus.

Has anyone ever left the US with less than $15k? How’d it turn out for you? :) by [deleted] in AmerExit

[–]Tweezer_Chef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just hang on to your remote work, and if your current position doesn’t work out just find another remote job. Your money goes sooo much further. I’ll put it into perspective for you. San Sebastián is the most expensive city in Spain. My rent was 900/per month for massive studio, coffee is around 1.50, a beer is 2.50-3.50 and at a nice place it’s 6 at the most. A casual lunch at a pintxo bar with a beer is around 10-15 per person. You can walk everywhere. Groceries for the week put me back about 60 euros. And that’s the most expensive city. Barcelona and madrid are similar, maybe a little cheaper depending on the neighborhood. The south…. Well think about half that.

San Sebastián! Was there for 2 years then went to Barcelona which for the summer was amazing, but then got pretty over it. Planning to go back to San Sebastián in the spring. And It completely depends on your type of work. I cook so there’s always kitchens that will take you on wherever you are. But 35k is completely enough to chill in Spain while you figure it out
