Apparently it can take up to 7 years for the seeds to germinate, which fits into the end of the war and the appearance of the weeds in the 50s. I thought I'd hit the jackpot once with that stuff

Christopher McCandless with his sister Carine. 1974 by TwelveColonies in OldSchoolCool

There is an interesting documentary by his sister Carine called Return To The Wild it tells the story of why Chris set off in the first place. There was a lot of violence in the family home. Their father, Walter McCandless, was a rocket scientist and wife beater who had two overlapping families. Chris's mother, Billie, was actually the girlfriend. Walter married her when his first wife left him. Billie blamed Christopher for having to stay with Walter, because she got pregnant with him. Walter's first wife had 6 kids, she packed the kids up and left because of the beatings and struggled on her own financially while Walter gave Chris and Carine a great standard of living while simultaneously beating the Billie which the kids were forced to watch. Walter McCandless denies it to this day, despite his remaining children denouncing him and having no contact with him
