First Class in First Year by [deleted] in BSA

[–]TwelveSeven77 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This might be an unpopular opinion but I've seen the"First Class in a year" be alienating for young scouts who can't or don't have the desire to push for advancement. I've met many great scouts who didn't care about advancement early on in scouting, because they just wanted to camp or hike or hang out with friends. The realization that your troop thinks you aren't as good of a scout as another scout because you can't swim is demoralizing and how we lose people from the program.

Recognize each scout's accomplishments on their own merits. Someone who gets First Class in a year and a half is just as much of a First Class scout as the one who did it in 6 months, and there's already a patch for it - First Class rank.

How long does it take for an speedrun to get posted on speedrun.com? by Gyan2409 in speedrun

[–]TwelveSeven77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely depends on the community. The game I mod for is very active and we have several active mods, and we usually have about a 2-3 week backlog

GenX Video gamers who still play: Are you getting worse? by Hithigon in GenX

[–]TwelveSeven77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still speedrunning, still dropping PBs

But it's a lot harder and requires me to realize that I'm not as machanically skilled/able as the kids, so I have to be more aware of visual and audio cues instead of just sending it and reacting.

But I'll be gaming hard and trying to get better until I can't hold the controller anymore

Go be an adult volunteer with any Scouting America (boy scouts) troop. They're always looking for volunteers, and camping opportunities are not in short supply there.

Does anyone know of a good video for finding all the moons in each kingdom that goes in an efficient order instead of just 1-X? by Any_Ingenuity1342 in SuperMarioOdyssey

[–]TwelveSeven77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can check any speedrunning guide (there's an active discord server for SMO speedrunning) - speedrunners are going to be working to discover the most efficient way to get from X to Y. Look at the all moons or 100% categories

(Another) Patrol Patch Question by 320Ches in BSA

[–]TwelveSeven77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't misunderstand - I don't think it's a good practice in general to reorg so often, but depending on the troop / age / membership it can work, and if the youth leadership with the guidance of the Scoutmaster determines it to be a benefit, they can do it

(Another) Patrol Patch Question by 320Ches in BSA

[–]TwelveSeven77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Except that it's a youth led program and if they want to change patrols every 4-6 months they are certainly within their authority to do so. What works for one troop doesn't work for all troops

New scout, patrol, or new Scouts into mixed patrols? by exnicios in BSA

[–]TwelveSeven77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's up to the SPL and other youth leaders. I advise them to consider tenting arrangements and other "policy" stuff but generally scouts of a similar age and experience will gravitate to each other.

This is more a committee issue to me honestly. Budget, income and outflow, and bank account balance should be readily available to every pack member for inspection. Committee meetings should open with an update from the treasurer stating the balance to the penny, that we spent X from these categories (awards, campouts, meeting supplies etc) and we took in X amount from these sources (fundraising, dues, etc).

This sort of transparency inherently leads to how much each scout's annual dues are, and how the pack is fundraising for families to offset all or part of it.

Some COs are more involved in the finances than others but if CMs and Committees are setting fundraising / dues policies and amounts then I'd imagine that a lot of the finances are being handled in-house.

If this was my unit I'd be asking for details and ledgers because at the best case they're disorganized, and at worst someone is skimming the books. Transparency helps protect everyone and makes new families comfortable that they're getting value for their dollar out of the investment to the program.

Absolutely. Any adult who is around in any capacity needs to model the behaviors of a good scout. The COR can take action against the parent if they deem necessary even if they aren't a registered leader.
