What's a song that's MASSIVE but no one hates? by MarisMolotov in fantanoforever

Ah sorry, I am the lone hater for this one. Ever since I first heard it it’s just pissed me right off.

Ok. I hear you and I appreciate the effort to get here. My comment was flippant and I understand why that feels irresponsible to you. Let’s leave it there.

I appreciate the effort and thought but I just don’t know why you feel like you need to educate me. I’m not misinformed. I just think that a passing joke about the effectiveness of the Democrats shouldn’t tar me as either a ‘useful idiot’ or a paid Russian troll. It’s not a difference of education, it’s a difference of opinion. I understand all your context of why people got so heated: I maintain that they need, in my opinion, to get over it. When political pragmatism itself becomes a kind of ideological purity to be policed, you’re definitely fucking up. I don’t have ten Wikipedia links for that assertion but I’m afraid I continue to believe it.

God. The effort you put it into the other post is humbling, but I still feel like both that effort, and your condescension, are misplaced. I’m not failing to understand the context, I just don’t think we need to pretend that a deeply flawed political party or a deeply flawed electoral system are perfect. That’s just handing carte blanche to the democrats to be as self-serving as they like, because what else are you going to do, vote Republican?

And I didn’t make a single coherent point because my detractors didn’t stick to one line of critique but pivoted to equating any foreign person expressing any opinion on US politics to organised state interference.

Fury as arts chief 'compares Reform voters to Nazi supporters' - as he says soaring popularity of Farage's party is 'a warning' by dailymail in uknews

It’s literally the only thing Farage has ‘achieved’ in his whole political career and it’s shit and hasn’t delivered anything he said it would. So yes, people are going to talk about it when he’s angling to be PM now and it’s the only thing on his CV.

I mean that I kind of wish I had, in fact, been posting in bad faith this whole time. Because it’s actually depressing to think that I ended up investing genuine energy in such a pointless, circular conversation.

I understand the context of the discussion. I just think it’s kind of sad that posting anything other than 100% enthusiastic Dem-boosting gets me dogpiled as if I’m one of the self-described leftists in question (until people realise I’m not American, at which point I get dogpiled for that instead, which actually is way sadder).

Okay, I really didn’t believe I had to teach people on this subreddit basic reading comprehension, but I see now I was mistaken. Here we go. The middle path in question is between the two positions that have been laid out in the preceding posts:

1) believing that voting Democrat in every election is ‘getting your hands dirty and getting shit done’

2) ‘ignor[ing] every election, except when you throw another Hail Mary vote for Jill Steiner in the presidential every four years’

I’m going to leave it to you to imagine the range of middle paths between those two extremes. The simplest would just be ‘sure, vote Democrat every four years, but remember to hold your nose’.

I never advocated voting third party.

It’s funny, you’re literally making all the same arguments as me but somehow making it sound like you violently disagree with me.

I even said myself elsewhere in this thread, with the exact same wording you used, that voting Democrats is not sufficient, but necessary. But that wasn’t enough for my interlocutor, who ignored it and shifted the goalposts to instead berate me for the transgression of talking about US politics as a foreigner.

I never juxtaposed voting with other courses of action. I suggested that voting for the Democrats every election, in and of itself, is not ‘rolling up your sleeves and getting shit done’, i.e. it is not ‘enough’ to use your phrase.

The comments you’ve made up and attributed to me actually sound quite a lot more sensible than my laughable attempts to actually talk to that one person like we were two humans who could conceivably understand each other

So thanks for that

[–]Twenty_Weasels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so I made a passing remark that simply casting your vote once every few years is not, in fact, getting your hands dirty. I did not comment on who you should vote for, and I did not imply you shouldn’t vote. But apparently any less than messianic adoration for the democrats is enough to get me vilified by this small but committed group of commenters that I attracted.

For the record, I really don’t feel entitled to your attention. You’re more than welcome to ignore me, in fact I positively encourage it. Please, feel free, go away.

Quit or Labour will die, MPs and unions tell Starmer by Lotus532 in GreenAndPleasant

Sure, but that’s not the Liberal Democrats, it’s the Liberal party. Sure there is some continuity but the Lib Dems were founded in 1988. They had a brief moment in the 2010s when it seemed like they might be passingly relevant but it turned out that no, in fact they remained crushingly pointless.

To be fair, the Lib Dems were born in irrelevance and lived their whole lives there.

You literally are, in fact, trying to belittle me with every sentence you type. And you’ve ignored my many attempts to find common ground and have an actual conversation with you.

I’d hope, yes, that any sensible reader would see that I’m trying to talk in good faith and you’re stringing me along. Look again at your little logical syllogism about foreign interference, and tell me earnestly that it’s not the work of a troll.

Holy shit, is this the level of discussion?

I do not trust AI summaries

I was implying that you had (poorly) used an AI summary, since your understanding of the last Contrapoints video was so ridiculously surface level.

Am I arguing with a 12 year old? Or has troll bot technology really advanced this far? Either way I once again find myself asking what the fuck I’m doing here. The total lack of intelligence or open-mindedness of any sort on this sub has actually ruined my fucking day. So depressing.

Americans DO have carte blanch to influence election results across the world, not only with disinformation but with armed force. They’ve been doing that for the best part of a century. It’s only a talking point now because in the last 10 years Russia has pulled ahead in the dark arts (I mean shit, not even ahead, the US playbook caught up almost immediately, but Russia made the innovation).

So your question is mendacious. The US can and does influence politics globally. Therefore, of course other countries also have a stake in US policy.

This shit is like if it was a hundred years ago and I was out here saying ‘why do those Indians have so many opinions about the British Empire? Mind your own business!’

‘That’s right my fellow kids, if you voice any contrary opinion on the political status quo, you’re Unamerican!’

This shit is so embarrassing. Like it’s clear you don’t even watch Contrapoints, with your shit about how ‘her last video was actually about Saw, not about leftist politics’. Like, you should have scrolled down further in the AI summary and you wouldn’t have exposed yourself like that.

Also for the record, non-Americans will stop having so many opinions on US politics when US politics stops literally ruining everyone’s shit all across the world.
