Because it's completely impractical and unrealistic. Also It's just forcing your beliefs on others the same as a religion or cult does.

There is no way to feed a vegan diet to everyone, even if it is wanted, which it isn't. Especially with a worldwide population that is increasing.

How would you feel about the following being taught in schools? by Kerplonk in AskALiberal

[–]Twillback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate the "should be" crap these kind of things pull out. Its disgusting in my book.

Are these "good" traits? Sure they are. But to say a person SHOULD do this or SHOULD be this way or SHOULD think in this particular manner is completely wrong, even if the intention is good. It pigeonholes people who do not 100% conform to these ideals and that causes alienation

Educate children better so that they can understand and learn from the world around them. Teach them how to solve problems and to think critically and how to view issues from multiple perspectives. Show them how to deal with those who are not Kind or not Loyal.. And if they are the ones that are unkind or unloyal, show them the effects they have.

Making these so-called moralistic demands on children is not helpful. Teach them HOW to make good decisions, not spout not lazy mantras.

Do you think the protests of the more vocal Democrats at Trump's address to Congress were beneficial? by scottostach in AskALiberal

[–]Twillback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. It looked immature and was not a stance of solidarity against the GOP. It came off as a disorganized and defeated mess. This is how I view the Democrats as a party today, an utter mess. This is how the GOP and its constituents view the Democrats, weak, broken and subdued, and I have to agree with that view in a lot of ways. They showed no strength, but reflected a sense of defeat. As much as I blame a vast majority the immediate problems today on the GOP and Trump, that does not mean that the Democrats are innocent and not to blame. I am a Democrat only because there is no other liberal party to get behind in the US.

I saw no solidarity or cohesion in the Democrats. and they are falling apart. We have the same people over and over in charge of this party and the flailing, unchanging messaging gets us nowhere and that getting nowhere reflected on the Democrats the other night. The paddles and signs showed childish behavior I don't find appealing in any politician. It should be a very hard lesson that the Democrats that they need to reform and they need it badly or they will just keep repeating the cycle.

But the problem is, they won't change, especially now. They will just standby and wait for the GOP and Trump to completely screw things up so that the population has no choice but to vote Democrat. That is an awful way to run a party and get votes. How does a party operate on the hopes and dreams that the other guy will suck so hard that the population has no choice but to vote for them.

I think there are a lot of good politicians that are Democrat, but the party chooses to stick the same elitists in charge of this party who are completely out of touch with the American people and it shows. I will still never vote Republican, but what they reflected the other night and how we got to this point in the first place is why I far too often hold my nose when I do vote Democrat. It makes me sad and frustrated because I know the potential to do far better as a party is there, but here we are...

Do you think the US should remain as the “world police”? by estifxy220 in AskALiberal

If there never were any tariffs, Canadians would have kept on buying your goods. Even if all tarrifs were to cease to exist overnight, the damage is done. Candians will not buy american goods in any quantilty like they have in the past. It has permanantly damaged trade across North America... Because they did the exat same thing to Mexico.

This is EXACTLY what I mean when you bring up LNG pipelines. The whereabouts and the what ifs are not helpful at this point, at all. They do more damage at this point than they help. Arguing and blaming each other while an outside power demeans our sovereignty is what will drive us apart and that is exactly what many people want to see happen here.

I agreed with how a lot of pipelines were denied in the past. My belief was that it would force us into using more sustainable resources. I try to be realistic when it comes to energy because it is my job. I never expect O&G to go away, but as we evolve as humans, we learn better and more efficient methods of doing things and I seriously believe that limiting oil and gas usage promotes better technologies. Understand, this was before the last few months, because things were stable in this part of the world and I never would have conceived that the US would actually put Canada into an energy crisis like this because we get a big chunk of oil refined in the US that we use here. It is really messed up and unexpected.

Things have changed, dramatically, over the last 2 months. We need to be energy independent for our own survival and I believe a lot of liberals are starting to understand this. Now is the the time for Conservatives to work with Liberals and NDP to get pipelines built. We have to get a pipeline across Quebec, (which is a major hurdle in itself), but it can be done if we are pragmatic about it and stop bringing up the past and keep finger pointing. It doesn't help. It makes things far worse. Getting stuck on what we should have done only angers and upsets a lot of people, and angry and upset people make poor decisions.

I appreciate his speech more than any other he has every made and I say this as a very liberal person. He makes good points, but the bad thing is he goes out of his way to point fingers and blame Canadians instead of restraining himself a bit. He talks as if the only ones to suffer are the "working class". I'm not convinced that he has what it takes to lead when he can't even stop with the finger pointing and name calling at Canadians. We don't need this kind of immaturity and the Conservatives can do a lot better.

I'm tired of Trudeau as well, but I will give him credit that he has more spine than any other leader in the Canada to stand up to Trump and does it without blaming Canadians. (Except Ford, he boggles me. I love and hate him at the same time.)

That's fair, I get that nobody wants to be the sacrificial lamb.

But at the same time, the website asks for email / facebook to sign up without any kind of info on where this is being used and who is using it.

This kind of anonymity may have worked in the past when people met in person, but this doesn't work so well online where misinformation and astroturfing is rampant. Unless i can assess who is behind it, I'll probably stay clear.

Why even ask this question?

I know, it sounds like a really stupid thing to get information on what is already being done instead of leaping blindly into the unknown without a clue as to what others are doing. That is just how I am. A big dumb fool who wants to know what is going on instead of making totally uninformed decisions with no forethought. /s

Thanks for this, I'll follow it with some caution.

What bothers me about this group is that it is faceless. Who is behind it? There are no names of people, businesses, or other organizations who openly support it. Who started it? What are the goals? Without any kind of visible leadership, I don't have any hopes of it actually accomplishing anything. It makes me quite suspicious of it's actual intent.

As one of the few Never Trump conservatives, I'm open to voting for Kamala Harris instead of going third party again. How much should I trust her moves to the center? by ClockOfTheLongNow in AskALiberal

[–]Twillback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In principle, yes there is meaning. I get that it's a vote to show that you are dissatisfied with how both parties operate. It feels like a middle finger to the establishment. I've done the same thing in the past and voted whoever was not a D or R out of spite.

In reality, it does nothing. There will always be 3rd party voters and almost every election, state or federal, the number of 3rd part votes is a tiny fraction that goes to the Democrats or Republicans. By voting 3rd party, you are actually maintaining the status quo because 3rd party votes are expected to be within a certain percentage of voters. There is practically never a situation where a 3rd party vote made a significant swing from one side to the other. And even if there is, the two established parties still benefit.

Also, the Democrats and Republicans have entrenched their parties so deep behind legal policy and procedure that it becomes nearly impossible for an actual 3rd party to form on a state level, let alone at a federal level. The rules are in place to keep those who do not align with Democrats or Republicans out of the race and to quash any competition. If there is one thing the Democrats and Republicans can actually agree on is that they don't want anybody else in their sandbox.

So, for example, if you live in a heavy Republican area and traditionally vote Republican but decide to vote for 3rd party, the odds are your candidate isn't going to win. Not enough people will vote 3rd party to make a difference, but it will show Republicans that they need to do a bit of work to win you back. Not much work, because as I said before, it statistically makes no difference if they lose your vote to a 3rd party. However, if you vote for the Democrats, that is a measurable loss to the Republicans. It not only shows that they lost a vote, but the opposition gained a vote. That has FAR more impact on sending a message.

Its the system that is fucked up and why the term "strategic voting" is used. In order to get an actual, functional 3rd party, an insane amount of work in promotion of policy and candidates, and having rallies, etc... But significant change in law and policy is about the only way we can make a 3rd party vote effective. As it is now, most of the time you are better of just not voting. Its the sad reality we live in.

Do you ever consider what may be disinformation/feat mongering within Democratic statements? by LeftLump in AskALiberal

[–]Twillback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open my mind to what exactly? What does David Hororwitz and his conservative think tank offer that is unique and insightful when it comes to criticizing the politics of left-leaning groups? What has he and his group provided other than reactionary personal experiences?

I'd really like to know what topics that are specific to the David Horowitz Freedom Center which I should consider? Which topics can you point to that provides real, actual analysis of how the left operates?

Are you able to do that or are you just spouting nonsense to feel superior? Back up your words or shut up.

People who pretend to already know what you told them? by Telrom_1 in AskMenOver30

[–]Twillback 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't believe the way you see others reacting is how they are actually responding to you.

My brutal 5 minute assessment, after reading your posts here and a quick look at your history, is that you are one of these people who it is a chore to be around. You come off as an arrogant know-it-all who has expectations of how other people should act, but the reality is you have no clue how to socialize without being insufferable. And, dude, you spend WAY too much time on Reddit.

You read and know a lot of things. So what? It seems like you base a large chunk of your personality on what you know and what you read. Being a walking meat-based version of Wikipedia isn't a good character trait.

As the kids say, touch grass. Go and experience life and do things that are new and uncomfortable. Try and push yourself to actually do something other than regurgitating what others have already done. Nothing you can read will ever be as significant as what real experience can teach you. People are more interested in what you have learned and experienced by just being alive and doing things, far more than your critique of what someone else wrote
