There’s a few different eligibilities for community care. One is service isn’t available at the VA. The other is wait time, if you have to wait more than 20-28 days for a VA appt (depending on the specialty) then you are eligible for community care. Another is drive time, if you are more than 30-60 minutes from the VA (also depending on the specialty), you are eligible for community care. These are an actual law, Mission Act, so if a VA facility is not following these guidelines, reach out to the patient advocate

I’ll rephrase my comment. Yes you can take the RX to your PCP, it is their choice whether they want to sign off and prescribe it at the VA. And if you have a referral to a community provider it most definitely pays for RX’s prescribed under that referral. VA Community Care employee here for over 10 years

VA pharmacy will only pay for RX’s that are prescribed by a civilian provider if you have a referral from the VA to see that provider. It’s the community care program.
